Asus has opened its Computex 2026 showing by announcing a new OLED-equipped version of its Xbox-branded handheld gaming PC. Meet the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20. Also the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses.
Now, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is clearly better than the ROG Xbox Ally or the ROG Xbox Ally X, but is it twenty times better? I assume that’s what the X20 is trying to indicate. Or maybe it’s about contrast ratios? No, it’s for the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Gamers sub-brand.
The ROG XBOX Ally X20 comes with an OLED display at a slightly larger 7.4 inches, retaining the 1080p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, but is able to push for a peak brightness of 1,400 nits compared to 500 of the Ally X, and has a DisplayHDR 1000 rating with full Dolby Vision support. It remains coovered in Corning DXC glass for durability and anti-reflection.
The system core is still using the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, which comes with 24GB of precious RAM and 1TB of NVMe storage as well. The controls have been tweaked though, with a new ‘transforming’ D-pad to switch between 4-way and 8-way directional design, improved face buttons to be more flush to the chassis, TMR joysticks for better durability, and rubberized handgrips. It’s in translucent black plastic, which I always like to see.
Running with Windows 11, the X20 is able to tap into the Auto SR preview, a Windows-specific upstacling technique that was previously reserved for Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs.
There’s no word on pricing, but expect this to cost a pretty penny, even if it wasn’t being bundled with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses. It is, though, and these $850 augmented reality glasses will push that price up quite a bit higher. They promise a different way of experiencing no-compromises gaming on the go, able to project a personal viewscreen into the world around you, simulating an up-to 171″ TV screen. Or mini cinema screen, I’d say.
But yeah, it’s pretty clear that naming has gone completely out the window for Asus and Microsoft. Asus insist on the ROG branding, Xbox are still tied to the Xbox Series X|S style of naming things (now in FULL CAPS XBOX for the official branding) and it’s all just very clunky. The AR glasses are just as criminal.
