Studio MDHR has announced that a new mainline Cuphead game is in development, along with a spin off called Mighty Cuphead Adventure which is an 8-bit platformer.

Studio MDHR is hard at work on a full Cuphead sequel, which will continue to embrace hand animation in the vein of the original, taking the characters on a new adventure. This game is still in early development, though, so fans of Cuphead will have to be patient.

But that’s not all, because a smaller team within Studio MDHR has been working on an 8-bit action platformer in the form of Mighty Cuphead Adventure. This game takes inspiration from gaming in the 1980s, and is even being created in the style of the era. It’s actually being programmed in Assembly and designed to the specs of the Sega Master System. It will go so far that, while Mighty Cuphead Adventure will of course be released across all major consoles and PCs, it will also be playable with a physical cartridge on a Sega Master System.

Wild.

Going back to the Cuphead sequel, co-founder Chad Moldenhauer explains, “Craftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do here at Studio MDHR. When it came time to peel back the curtain and share a little bit about what we’ve been up to, we couldn’t imagine a more fun way to do so than with today’s Special Bulletin. Crafted with the wonderful teams at Toronto’s Stop Motion Department & Continue Agency, we hope the announcement will transport players to the era we’ll be taking them to in our next project, Mighty Cuphead Adventure.”

While there are no release dates for either of the games, Mighty Cuphead Adventure will be launching first across all consoles. Cuphead 2, which is what we’re going with for now, is still in early development so don’t expect for at least a year or two.

Cuphead Review

In our Cuphead review, Dave said, “Cuphead was well worth waiting for. It provided exactly what Studio MDHR said it would be – a boss rush with plenty of well-designed bosses and gorgeous presentation that mimics the Fleisher brothers’ art style. Depending on how used to 2D platformers with difficult bosses you are, there’s a decent amount on offer, though with limited side attractions beyond the bosses, it could all be done before you know it. It’s a swell ol’ time though.”
