Another of the most acclaimed virtual reality games is getting a flatscreen port, as Vertigo Games has announced that Arizona Sunshine is being ported to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.

Arizona Sunshine was one of the early big hits of virtual reality, as it really nailed the first person VR shooting mechanics and did so against the ever popular shooter enemies: zombies. The game casts you as dark-humoured survivor Sunny who’s gone a bit stir crazy talking to the undead that he calls “Fred” and so heads out on a road trip across Arizona, making friends with a dog along the way.

The game is being turned into a third-person shooter to let you see the brutal finishing moves play out in all their gory… I mean glory.

It was great in co-op, and it will be great in co-op, as this port features both online and couch co-op for two players. that could be with another friend being human… or with player two being Buddy, your four-legged friend.

As I said, this isn’t the first time that a VR-first game has been ported across to flatscreen, with the mousey adventures of Moss also having a PC and console port. It certainly feels like a sign of the times, with Sony having given up on PSVR2 in all but an official announcement, Meta having significantly pivoted away from VR to do its AI nonsense, and the struggles that Valve has faced in shipping the new Steam Frame VR headset. The fact that Vertigo Games had been VR-only for the past decade and is now breaking that trend says a lot.

We enjoyed this series in its natural habitat, from the original which we played on PSVR, or the massively enhanced and much prettier Arizona Sunshine 2 and remake. Let’s stick with that remake, for which Tuffcub said, “It seems odd giving a remake of game a higher score than it’s sequel but the Arizona Sunshine Remake takes all of the good elements from it’s sequel and thankfully, very few of the bad elements. Great fun in co-op mode, but playing alone makes it more tense, scary and certainly more of a challenging.”
