Mike Bithell and his team are back with a new game that, once again, throws the rulebook out the window and cackles devilishly in the face of convention.

The game, Vampirium: 1997, finds you playing as a descendant of Dracula who is now King of Britain. We’re not sure what has happened to Liz, Charles, and Diana (this is 1997 so she might still be alive), but it’s probably not good.  Your task is to eliminate enemies across a series of locations. thus enforcing the rule of the new King.

Sounds like proper hack and slash game, doesn’t it? That’s what vampire games usually are, creeping around mansions and hiding in the shadows, springing on enemies from behind a curtain, that sort of thing.

Well, that’s what it is, but not in the way you would expect. Rather than perform acrobatics on a joypad in an open world environment, you must combine tiles and verbs to execute actions via a minimalist interface. It’s easier to watch a video than to explain more, so here’s the announcement trailer.

We also have Mike himself – who seems very happy to have invented a new ‘imslim’ genre – narrating a mission to explain how the game works.

The game will be coming to Early Access on Steam  and you can Wishlist it right now.
