Australian gamers have suffered in recent history due to the ratings system that was in place for video games, which had a maximum classification of M15+. Any game that exceeded the M15+ rating would either have to have content cut to make retail, or be banned from sale within the country. One of the biggest titles to be banned was the recent Mortal Kombat reboot.
However, Australian gamers can now celebrate as from January 1st, 2013 the R18+ rating will come into effect. Jason Clare, Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, spoke to News.com.au about the new rating.
“The R18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material. The reforms also mean that adults are able to choose what games they play within the bounds of the law.”
The new rating will bring video games under the same type of classification system Australia has for films and other entertainment media. The decision concludes the Australian ratings debate that started in 2009.

It’s about time. They have had classification for 18+ movies but never bothered with games. I’m happy that they have finally seen sense and are changing this.

Probably means more games will come out of Australia as a result. Many developers over there may have been put off by the age rating. Lets face it many games are 18 rated these days.
