Buy A Game On PS3, Get A “Significant” Discount On The PS4 Version

PlayStation users will be able to get the PlayStation 4 versions of this year’s biggest games for a significantly reduced price if they’ve already bought them on the PlayStation 3.

Games such as Call Of Duty Ghosts, Watch_Dogs, Assassins Creed 4, Battlefield 4 will carry heavy digital reductions for a limited time only, if you’ve already purchased the game on the PS3.

The PlayStation 4 will be releasing on the 29th November in Europe, which is only a matter of days after some of these games hit the shelves.

  1. This is good news but how will PS4 know you have the game if it’s retail? Will it be digital downloads only for both PS3 and PS4 for this to count?

    • I’d guess that the data needed could be read from your PSN profile carrying over to PS4, possibly from the activation data associated with each PSN user profile, I think all games retail or digital get activated when installed on PS3?

      • I know how!! :P It’d be cool if it checked by reading your trophies. Like even if you havent done anything, once you start the game, the 0% is on your profile. Sorry just a smart idea :P

      • So in theory you could rent the PS3 version and get the PS4 version cheap?

      • @October91 Strangely enough, trophies could play a part with the game recognition process. A few games I’ve played more recently have mentioned at the install some reference to being a returning player of previous titles. Must be from reading my profile (I don’t know if it’s trophies, game data or game saves it reads) and given extra in-game cash, XP, liveries or some sort of token as a reward.

@leeroye That’d be cool but I think they’d tie in a games online activation against your profile, so a rented game with spent online code would be a stuffed parrot.

        All hypothetical of course!

  2. I wonder if renting one of the PS3 games will trigger the PS4 reduction,or will it be for digital purchases only?

  3. I’m guessing it’s only games bought from the playstation store, unless those games all have online passes which might be used to verify purchase?

    • I think they said for games bought from PS store, but not certain.

  4. Watchdogs and AC4 are both mainly story based games, so I can’t see any need to get them on PS3 and play again on PS4. I mean it’s only really worth it for games that you can’t wait for release but want to play consistently for a long time which sorta fits for CoD and BF but not unless you can share progress. Fifa would be worth it though as I don’t think I could wait two whole months for new Fifa, but couldn’t own a console without it on

  5. Think I’ll just wait for the PS4 versions.

  6. I want to know what they define as “significant”. Would hope it’s between 50-75%. Also, if you borrow a game from a friend, could you get the discount that way?

    • Exactly, the “significant” Vita memory card reductions are pretty pathetic.

Wouldn’t base any buying decisions on this without seeing some hard facts.

  7. I hope there’s a lot more games added to the list.

  8. I’d just get the PS4 versions, makes no sense buying them on PS3.

  9. Well I was thinking of getting BF4 for PS3 then transfering my stats and getting the game again for ps4, but I think I will wait now.

  10. Top titles tend to launch for £60 on psn store so it’ll have to be a hefty discount. A 50% discount would still have you paying £90.
