This week’s Famitsu reports that Samurai Warriors 4 will officially launch next year on PlayStation 3 and Vita in Japan.
It’s the first mainline title in Tecmo KOEI’s hack n’ slash spin-off since 2009’s Samurai Warriors 3 which launched exclusively on the Nintendo Wii. Though the game did receive a PS3 port, this version never released overseas.
Samurai Warriors 4 will feature over 50 playable characters, hailing from a variety of factions and warhosts to take up arms during the Warring States period. However, as previous instalments have demonstrated, this isn’t an interactive history lesson. Samurai Warriors 4 will no doubt exhibit the same brutal, fast-paced brand of action that has kept the series afloat for well over a decade.
The initial report doesn’t outline any major gameplay revisions, suggesting that Samurai Warriors 4 will more or less mirror Dynasty Warriors 8. With that said developer Omega Force has confirmed that character switching will make an appearance.
The feature is said to be lifted from 3DS-exclusive, Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, allowing players to zip between points on a map as opposed to the character switching found in crossover series, Warriors Orochi.
There’s no word on an overseas release though it seems highly likely.
