Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced a reboot of the classic four player co-op arcade game, Gauntlet. The “completely modernized action RPG” will be available via Steam and will include full support for SteamOS and Steam Machines.
Gauntlet is being produced by Arrowhead Game Studios and keeps the familiar line up of Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie and Elf but drops them in procedural dungeons with a bunch of new moves and spells.
Also it needs to come to consoles, like, now. Please.
Warner Brothers picked up the rights to Gauntlet (along with Mortal Kombat) back in 2009 when Midway Games went bust. This game is the first of the WB Games Vault, a direct-to-digital portfolio that will include games based on popular Warner Bros. and Midway brands, plus original IP, across multiple digital networks.

Remembered the original even though we never made it through more than the first few levels as it was eating money left, right and centre at the ol’ arcade. However, I’ve just enjoyed Hammerwatch (with Teflon) which was a bit of a blast. Quite the ode to Gauntlet, complete with pixel-style tomfoolery. Saying that, this new Gauntlet version looks bloody lovely so count me in.

The original was great. There wasn’t many games where you could have 4 players at once around when that was released, apart from Super Sprint I can’t think of many others.
Ooh, just remembered Quartet which came out afterwards.
All I can remember is we all used to crap ourselves and leg it whenever some monk hooded type figure appeared shooting fireballs type things. In fact I’m sure it was invincible and walked through walls or something.

That was Death, he appeared when you were taking too long and used to wlak through walls and as soon as he touched you yourlife was drained.

Ah, I’ll never forget the sound effect when he made contact with you. Talk about really letting you know that he was utterly ripping your health to bits in a matter of moments.

Ah yes. It’s coming back to me now. It was one of those, “quick leg it to the funny square shaped twirly transporter block thing!” which was probably just a door.
