The next Need For Speed game will shake off the Underground and Most Wanted sub-titles and be a complete reboot of the racing series, with the game set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Following on from the announcement, Ghost Games has confirmed that the game will focus on car customisation, authentic urban car culture and the ability to tell a story. The developer revealed that they spoke to the fans about what they wanted from the new game.
“Having a gripping narrative, a storyline that pulls you through the game, where you really care about your car because we give you so many elements of tweaking it, building it and making it your own,” explained the developer. “And where we set you in an open world with lots of variety. It’s trying to build a game that’s defining the core pillars of what we think Need for Speed is.”
The game will be set in the fictional area of Ventura Bay which is being described as an “urban playground” which will “come alive while you sleep”.
The key features of the game include:
- Rich Authentic Customisation: Build a car that reflects your character through extensive visual and performance customisation.
- Five Ways to Play: Need for Speed returns with 5 unique ways to play, Speed Style, Build, Crew and Outlaw, enabling you to earn reputation and ultimately win your way.
- West Coast Urban Setting: Discover a nocturnal open world of urban car culture you never knew existed.
According to the Game website, the new racer has a possible September release date although it is important to point out that this is just an estimate as no official release date has been confirmed. Historically, Need for Speed games have generally released in either October or November but may break from tradition this year to avoid what is usually an incredibly busy release schedule for games.

Even more likely to buy it then if it is then, but from the EA financials that were released earlier this month (TSA article ‘New Need For Speed Game Launching This Year, Mirror’s Edge Coming Early 2016’), it shows a Q3FY2016 release window, which is Q4 in normal terms, October-December.

…which will “come alive while you sleep” – Eh? Whats the point in that? lol

That’s exactly the bit that I picked up on – I don’t want it coming alive whilst I am asleep, I would prefer it was alive whilst I was playing the damn thing tbh! :D
Also, I think I know what they are talking about when it comes to a story, but they need to be mindful of ‘The Run’. A completely story driven driving experience does not a good game make. Especially when cutscenes ruin the driving experience & then you have to complete QTE’s as well. No thank you!
However, if they make it a bit like the underground series with some of the excitement of Most Wanted’s chases etc, they could be onto a winner.

I don’t think it’ll be like The Run as it says it’s ‘open world’, at least I hope it’s not.

“a gripping narrative” is not what I want to hear. Ugh.
