Video games getting decent movie adaptations isn’t a situation that has fared well over the years. Recently there has been a push to get game IPs in front of a bigger audience via the medium of film, with a recent example being the Warcraft movie. Perhaps the bigger video game movie so far is yet to come this year, with Assassin’s Creed releasing in cinemas this winter. Ubisoft has already stated that it wants the Assassin’s Creed brand to become more known, with the movie not being made solely to make money according to MCV.
This is only the beginning of a new era for video game movies, with another step being taken. Over the weekend Jean-Julien Baronnet, a producer on the Assassin’s Creed movie, announced he is opening Marla Studios to create more films based on games. He recently left Ubisoft Motion Pictures after five years there. While there are no solid plans in place regarding which IPs will be getting the big screen treatment Jean does hope development will begin next year on a film.
