Viking fighting game, Blood of Heroes, has been cancelled while still in testing developer xTEN has confirmed. The game was originally planned for release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
In a statement to players, the team said they were saddened they hadn’t been able to gather enough interest to make the project viable.
Prepping their funeral longboat for Blood of Heroes, xTEN will host a send-off on May 26, 2022, at 5PM GMT. This is for the PC-only, with everyone invited to play one last time, including the developers themselves.
Why are Viking video games so popular right now?
Those who had previously purchased in-game items and currency can get a refund, though there’s a catch. You can only apply for a refund within 14 days of making your purchase.
While it’s sad to see any video game cancelled, Blood of Heroes did little to impress us during our brief spell with the Viking brawler. Its PvP combat was over-simplistic and lacked flair, each match usually descending into frantic bouts of button bashing. It almost felt as if the studio had put more effort into its gratuitous microtransactions, given its background in free-to-play mobile games. That said, we hope xTEN can salvage something from the project moving forward.
Here’s what the team had to say in their statement regarding the game’s closure:
Everything that has a beginning has an end. And when the blood that covers the blade turns into rust, the flame of rage grows tired, and the search for an opponent becomes an eternal quest, then the time to surrender their weapons comes even for Blood of Heroes warriors. The time is ripe to acknowledge the harsh truth: we did the best we could, but we weren’t able to get enough players. On May 27th Blood of Heroes will stop its servers and cease to exist as a project.
We are saddened. But we aren’t broken. All the energy we’ve put into Blood of Heroes has turned into experience, which we will certainly use for our future games, the games we’re already working on.
We are grateful. For the fact that you exist. For your passion for battles and your drive to overcome. For your courage to play an unfinished project, for believing in us, for your praise, and your criticism, and for infinite motivation.
If you’re longing for you next Viking video game fix, there are rumours that God of War Ragnarok will feature in an upcoming PlayStation State of Play broadcast. Sticking with PlayStation for minute, Tribes of Midgard is currently free on PS Plus. Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launched its Dawn of Ragnarok expansion earlier this year. We’re also hoping to see more of Hellblade 2 in the near future.
