Debuting at EVO 2025 over the weekend, Sega and RGG Studio have shared a first look at the New Virtua Fighter Project gameplay. Check it out!
Set in a lavishly rendered training stage area, which looks about as sci fi as a Star Trek Holodeck or X-Men Danger Room, what’s more interesting is the ebb and flow of the fighting gameplay. There’s the solid thump and impact of combat with little puffs of smoke and flame, but really intriguing is the use of slow motion alongside cuts for cinematic impacts, dodges and more. It builds up to a roundhouse kick that knocks Akira’s tooth loose before he slumps to the ground.
RGG have stuck with showing Akira and Sarah Bryant trading blows, with Akira sporting a new undercover look in the form of a fedora and trenchcoat.
More details on the game will be shared at Tokyo Game Show 2025 in September.
Fans of the series have been waiting patiently ever since the original launch of Virtua Fighter 5. While it leapt through the past couple of generations, and is still very playable on modern consoles, there’s little to no online community right now. Of course, there’s a bit of a revival for Virtua Fighter 5 as well, in the form of Virtua Fighter 5 REVO. This expanded and enhanced rendition of the game launched for PC earlier this year, and is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X in October, with a Switch 2 release also in the works.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has become a lynchpin studio for Sega over the last few years. You’ll know them best as the studio behind the hugely popular Yakuza/Like A Dragon series, but as broad as that series has become, they’ve also handled recent Super Monkey Ball games as well. Given that Yakuza’s own combat was a hand-me-down from Shenmue, which was in turn fed a branch off from Virtua Fighter, this makes them the perfect team to take the series’ reins.
