Nintendo has revealed Star Fox, a Nintendo Switch 2 remake of the N64 rail shooter classic Star Fox 64 (better known in the PAL region as Lylat Wars). The big surprise is that it’s really just a matter of weeks away, launching on 25th June 2026.
After his cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, there had been rumours of a Star Fox remake, and it’s turned out to be true. Star Fox is a lavish remake of the second released game in the series – this actually a reboot of the series, after Star Fox 2 for SNES was shelved but eventually released with the SNES Mini Classic – featuring a visual overhaul that makes the planets you visit more diverse, makes the cast of characters more animalistic, and introduces new cinematic cutscenes and new mission briefings between stages.
The classic rail shooter gameplay remains, heading into battle in Fox’s Arwing with a handful of key weapons and moves, like the iconic barrel roll. You also have the land tank and underwater ship for certain planets. The game supports a plethora of game inputs, with the standard gamepad layout complimented by a mouse mode support for aiming, as well as support for the N64 gamepad that released for Switch Online.
There’s new and returning game modes, with the Campaign Mode featuring easy, normal and eventually expert settings, and retaining the branching paths that you can take through the embattled star system. Challenge Mode then brings new objectives to the levels, some of which aren’t featured in the campaign.
Rounding it out is a new 4v4 dogfighting mode, pitting Team Star Fox against Team Star Wolf. There’s three stages with set objectives, from capturing zones on Corneria to collecting energy crystals on Fichina, and retrieving stolen cargo in Sector Y. Team battles can take place online in both matchmaking and private matches, and there’s GameShare support for up to four players locally – supporting both Switch 2 and Switch – and with online support through GameChat.
And here’s another fun twist. You can use brand new GameChat character avatars to appear as Fox McCloud and the rest of Team Star Fox, when using a webcam. This uses an AR filter to mirror your expressions and movements in GameChat, similar to Vtubers on YouTube. I think that’s pretty fun!
