Two of the biggest multiplayer games from the 2010s are hooking up, with Fortnite x Overwatch bringing a handful of the most popular and recognisable heroes from Blizzard’s shooter into Epic’s game.

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 2 Act 3 will arrive tomorrow, Thursday 14th May, and will see the introduction of a bunch of Overwatch skins. Mercy, D.Va (presumably without her mech), Tracer and Genji feature in the trailer.

The blurb simply reads “Overwatch heroes D.Va, Genji, Tracer, and Mercy enter the fight as tensions rise between the Foundation and the Ice King to protect the island.”

I don’t know why, exactly, but this feels like a strange collab. These two games were really conceived around the same time, Overwatch launching in 2016 to massive acclaim and popularity, which was then only really superseded by the vast success of the battle royale for PUBG and Fortnite in 2017. Since then, Fortnite has embarked on a massive campaign to incorporate pretty much every IP and licensed character possible, from Master Chief to Aloy, from Thanos to Batman, from Darth Vader to… just a bunch of real life sports stars and pop stars. Yet it still feels a little odd for Activision Blizzard characters to appear in Fortnite. Who’s next, Captain Price, Soap and Makarov?
