Yesterday I decided I really wanted DJ Hero, like really wanted it. For about an hour or so, as I stared blankly at my online banking statements: the £100 investment actually made sense, and countless Youtube videos of the game in action mounted up against me and my credit card. I used to DJ, I can mix with the best of them (seriously) and still produce lots of music – I know what DJ Hero is trying to do and although it’s about as far from real DJ’ing as Guitar Hero is from playing a guitar, it still looks like fun.
Last night, at about 4.30pm I got a press release informing me that “IGN has secured the exclusive first review of Activision’s upcoming DJ Hero” and that “the review will be live on the site after 17:00 today.” IGN had indeed secured the first review, and have scored the game a 9 out of 10. “DJ Hero is fantastic,” says the review, concluding with “in an overcrowded genre of music games, DJ Hero resides at the very top with the best of ’em.” Has this review made me more inclined to part with my cash and buy the game?
I suppose so. As far as I know (and Activision were unable to supply us with a review copy) other reviews are due soon, but Metacritic’s DJ Hero page is only currently listing the two IGN reviews (one UK, one US) and two print magazine reviews, so the score will probably sit at around 90% until later in the week. I liked Guitar Hero and I’m loving what I’ve heard so far in relation to the music in DJ Hero, which is surely all I need to convince myself, right? But then I see the price again. £100.
I’ll see how I feel on Friday.
