2K Games have just announced XCOM, a “re-imagining” of the classic PC game from the creators of BioShock 2. Aiming to capture the “suspense, tension and fear of one of gaming’s most beloved franchises” the game, currently in development at 2K Marin, will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC with PS3 owners left in the dark.
Bizarrely, the old-school XCOM viewpoint has been abandoned in favour of “an immersive new perspective” with players able to “experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.” Yes, it’s now a first person shooter. Well, it is 2010, what did you expect?
“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K.
The press release issued says that XCOM will put humanity against “an unknown enemy” and the game will place players “directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat.” 2K are aiming to stay “true to the roots of the franchise,” though, with strategy and risk playing a major role.
“By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.” It’ll also sell a lot more and look prettier in screenshots.
