Pac-Man Tackles Racism

Avi Arad, former CEO of Marvel Studios and now an ‘executive adviser’ for Namco Bandai, is bringing Pac-Man back to the small screen as a TV show rather than a game.

“We wanted to keep Pac-Man the same lovable guy he has always been, but (put him) in the 21st century,” Arad said.

By ‘puttting him in the 21st century’ Arad means ‘making him 3D’. I can live with that, could be fun watching him chase Bliky in 3D. But wait! There is more. Not only does Pac get a third dimension, as this is 21st century he gets feelings, absent parents, social statements and a school life.

The plot will see Pac-Man transformed in to a high school student who saves the world with his pals, Pinky, Inky, Blinky and Clyde.

“We feel we have a unique opportunity to have an action adventure, human interest story,” Arad said. “As a filmmaker, it’s a unique opportunity to get to know the characters you play. … We don’t know what happened to Pac-Man’s parents. He’s the only yellow one in Pac-Land; what does that mean? Is it a social statement? We’ll find out.”

No, you Muppet, he  is yellow as, back  the day, Arcade cabinets could only show 16 colours and the background of the game was was black, yellow was chosen so you could easily see his character. That would be a small, 16×16 pixel 2d character with no emotions, no missing parents and enemies in the shape of Pinky, Inky, Blinky and Clyde.

How can you have a ‘human interest story’ about a yellow pill popping sphere? Worst idea in the history of gaming and I’m including the Amiga CD32.
