The main features of Firmware 3.40 have been detailed on the EU Blog. It’s not just PlayStation Plus you’ll be getting when your PS3 completes the download, you’ll also get your hands on some nifty upgrades to some of the XMB’s features, such as the Photo Gallery and Facebook support.
Aside from the main feature, the ability to download and use PlayStation Plus, the Photo Gallery has had an overhaul with users now being able to upload and comment on photos on Facebook or Picasa. You’ll be able to share these photos with your PSN friends and print them directly from the Photo Gallery, providing you have a printer on your network.
Along with this comes a new application called ‘Video Editor and Uploader’ on the XMB, where you’ll be able to edit, save and upload the video files stored on your PS3 directly to Facebook or YouTube. The PlayStation Store now has a five star rating system for games, so you’ll be able to give feedback on the content you download.
Additional power save features are also in place (hopefully no battery indicators), with the default setting for System Auto-Off being 2 hours.
Some Facebook features were recently added to the PS3, and 3.40 builds on this, with a new standalone application now being available on the XMB. This allows for your PSN profile on Facebook, the sharing of Trophies and purchases from the Store as before and this even allows you to send PSN friend requests to other users.
So, there we have it. Firmware 3.40 will also provide content for those not purchasing PlayStation Plus, and the Video Editor and Facebook applications look to be good.

I realised about a year or so ago what a complete waste of my time facebook was so deactivated my account. Can think of many better ways to spend my time, like perhaps talking to people in real life. Still i know it still has a massive following, so this will make a lot of people happy.
Bodachi
But sometimes its nice just to have a quick chat via facebook. Or arrange a meet for “real life”.

I quit Facebook 6 months ago, and now I actually go out and do stuff instead of chatting about it online. All you have to do is watch that South Park episode, and you realise how ridiculous it is, and how much time is wasted on it.
Bodachi
I do something crazy and do both.
Serebii.Net
That South Park Episode was brilliant xD
But yes, I HATE FaceBook >_<

Behind PS+, Facebook is a great new feature, well done Sony! =D
Burgess_101
I was just thinking about implementing the rating system like on the xbox 360 the other day i mean if theres no problem on there im sure itll be fine on PSN
Charmed_Fanatic

This will be the last ever FW update I have to manually download, cool…
Roll on FW 3.50 which mows the lawn, hoovers and makes cups of coffee every hour, on the hour (and the half hour)
Bodachi
I thought you still have to download firmware updates manually, just game updates done automatically.
Watchful
They will download automagically, you just have to manually install them. Game updates and patches download and install automatically.
Bodachi
Ah I see, Awesome.
Tzares
good god, the coffee update sounds nice ><
(i actually invested in a system that starts the coffee machine when the alarm on my clock sounds.. AWSOME btw!!)

The Video editor sounds neat but i hope 3.40 fixes the browser cookies too.
Danza Di Fuoco
Hidden feature?
TSBonyman
They didn’t mention the flash update fo the browser when detailing 3.30 so hopefully yes, a ‘hidden’ or unreported feature/fix.
xdarkmagician
was the blocking of cookies an error, or was it done to help secure the system? as I too want my cookies back :)
Quinlank
I will use none of these features. Ah well…

“this even allows you to send PSN friend requests to other users.”
cant we do this already ? or am i reading that bit rong ?
and whatever happened to playstation share blog ? this software update a point that Sony dont listen to their consumers
i dont see the point of the video editior thats what a pc is for theres more powerfull apps that will do a much better job at video editing. We can already print photos from the PS3 so thats not really a new feature. Also dont see the point of the rating system on the store as most of the stuff on there is garbage and way overpriced which inflict people rating stuff a 1 or something

“this even allows you to send PSN friend requests to other users.”
cant we do this already ? or am i reading that bit wrong ?
You can now do it while on facebook.
squashme
yea we can already do that. how do you know if some1 has a PS3 on facebook ? you dont unless you ask them then ask them for their PSN ID to add them as a friend which we could already do so that feature is nothing new and is completely pointless
John Malcolm
So, no fixing of the browser and its behaviour with cookies – i.e. it forgets them when it closes? That’s more important to me than bloody Facebook!
Tzares
meh.. im sick of facebook >< couldnt care less about this update.. (well.. im getting psn+ tho.. so maybe i could..)
