As usual with firmware updates, version 3.40 brings with it some hidden features not mentioned on any of the pre-launch changelogs and Blog posts. Alongside the new stuff we learnt about last night – Facebook, video editing, rating and photo uploading are the following minor tweaks and additions:
- Your Friends List will now show Trophy levels as you hover over them.
- Friends Lists now have a golden ‘plus’ on them for anyone subscribing to PlayStation Plus.
- The colours of your Friend’s boxes faded in, rather than ‘jumping’ from the normal grey.
- There’s an option to calibrate the sensors in PlayStation Move controllers.
- Deep Color Output has been added for TV sets that support the feature over HDMI.
- The Video Editor cannot be used on videos installed on the hard drive before Firmware 3.40.
- A few PlayStation Plus items have appeared in the menus, such as Automatic Downloading.
If any more appear, we’ll let you know.

Deep color was always active (automatic) on previous firmware. It’s now possible to turn it off -which badly boost saturation on my set.

Could you alter the brightness on the xmb theme background before 3.40?
Bankzy108
Nope, but you can now. Thanks for this – allows you to see text much easier while also having a cool dynamic theme!
Winkle
Couldn’t remember seeing it before in the set up of your theme. Yes it does make a difference.
Dlaf42
yeah think so

It’s a shame Sony never put that Facebook ap on the XMB
Jas-n
No it’s not.

Same here. Not interested in the slightest, but then again I seem to be (a) in a minority and (b) a misery (true)

I noticed the PSP update now has game folders for Neogeo and PCengine if you sort it… are they bringing those games over here?

The browser cookies are still broken :(
xdarkmagician
they either re-enabled the cookies for the browser, or fixed the cookies error from the previous fw update, either way the cookies are safe.
TSBonyman
hmm, not sure about that but at work now so will check again later, hope you’re right though!
brownium
seems to be remembering me between sessions on gmail, which was not happening before. cookie problems may be partially solved at least.

I can confirm that the cookies are working for me now too. I logged in to TSA, closed the page, browsed a few diff urls and when i loaded TSA again i didn’t have to log-in all over again. Also I didn’t have to reset the cookie for PS3Youtube, which i’ve had to do each time i went there since 3.30. Success!
Out of all the new features and tweaks, nvm PS+, this is the one thing that has cheered me up.

I not sure, but I think there’s an extra row in the what’s new section, for a total of 12 boxes instead of 9. and if you try watching time sensitive content from the video PSN store that’s expired you get the usual, “content has expired” message, but now there’s a PSN store icon, and the option to return to the PSN store.
