Lunchtime Discussion: Loyalty

So other a month ago I got an email from jimmy-google with a rather good Lunchtime Discussion about his loyalty to Sony. Genius that I am, I completely forgot about it until last night. So here it is, for all to see. Enjoy! Oh and if you have an article of your own you can get hold of me from the staff page.

It was a Saturday afternoon in February about 13 years ago. The birds were singing in the trees. The sun was shining. The light reflected off the glossy box in my hands as I headed home. I sat down in my parent’s front room. Carefully pulled back the grey tabs. Slowly slide out each element in turn. Placed them in position. Opened the top. Removed the fresh film from the smaller clear plastic box. Took the circular black shiny piece out and popped it in place. And then flicked the power switch. The beautiful chimes started and it began.

That was the day. at the age of 14. when I got my hands on my first Playstation and my loyalty to the Playstation brand and Sony started. Within a couple of years my Dad had begun to refer to me as a Sony snob. I chose Sony MP3 players over iPods (I have one now but I still feel a bit dirty using it and I miss my old sleek Sony one which I swear has better sound quality). My mobile’s have been Sony for years (I think I’d pass out of a PSP Phone was released). My video camera is Sony and my TV would have been if I’d had the money (my 3D TV will certainly be Sony). Since the Playstation I’ve bought each Sony console at Launch (even the PSP Go which I love). I’ve had has a PS2, PS3 and PSP all die on me but I still go back to Sony.

Looking back on it my decision to go with all things Sony wasn’t that bad a choice but it wasn’t a perfect one either. The biggest problem is that I know it wasn’t based on logic.

My irrational loyalty stretches far beyond games. I’ll see a film just because a certain actor is in it, even if I know the film will be awful. I’ll buy an album I know I won’t listen to because I’ve bought every other album by the same band. My brain knows it’s stupid but I can’t help it. I’ll keep buying Sony, watching Simon Pegg films and buy Divine Comedy albums.

So the question is quite simple. What irrational loyalties do you have if any and how far have they taken you?

  1. I used to be a Xbox convert but switched to the PS3 about 12 months ago seeing it’s a much better entertainment device, better console, and as of now much better games. Thrown in the fact that you don’t have to buy any online subscription packages and to me it’s a no brainer.

  2. I’d say I have some measure of loyalty to Sony consoles, but never to the exclusion of other machines. I will buy most anything gaming hardware related that comes out, or at the very least try it out. There isn’t a single home console in the last 10 years I haven’t owned, but honestly the Playstation ones are the only ones that seem to consistently deliver on the kind of thing I enjoy playing(Possibly excepting PS3’s line up for the most part until Uncharted came out, but I was still well into PS2 at that time anyway, as it was still going pretty strong).

Recently I have had to start getting rid of machines I just plain had no need for anymore, first was the DS(Which has dried up a lot on games I enjoy lately, but I may go back for the 3DS, we’ll see) and then more recently the 360, which took the piss a bit too much this year with not only a very weak games line up(imo) through 2009/10(Mass Effect 2 excepted), but the repeated hardware problems got a bit much when the 250GB Elite I bought late last year broke down within a week of my old Pro doing the same. Last straw really. I use my PS3(s) for pretty much everything anyways, so I could do without it.

Wii was on the edge at one point, but it’s worth so little in trade these days and business has really been picking up with it’s games lately, so I’m keeping it. PSP I could live without for the most part, but I’ve bought so much downloadable stuff for it I couldn;t bring myself to cut ties completely… plus there are a few nice games coming this year still I guess. Other than that I occasionally use the PC for gaming.

I’d never rule out buying any machine based on some idea of loyalty, but if a console fails to sustain my interest for an extended period or has nothing I really care about in the horizon I won’t hesitate to bin it off if I can, regardless of how much aggressive overselling some people may attempt to subject me to on some products.

Give me a reason to buy your machine and I will, simple as that. Just make sure you give me a reason to keep it as well, and continue doing so.

  3. Sony all the way. PS3 all the way. PS3 has SO much more to offer and is SO much cheaper in the long run than Microshafted Xbust! I had PSX first day it was released (it cost me £290) :) I remember it well. Then bought PS2 like EVERYONE did! Now im sooo glad i stayed faithful instead of getting stuck in that rip off LIVE S@!T. SONY FOR EVER. I HATE them money grabbing B@#!;¥¦S IMO
