According to Chiyomaru Shikura, CEO of game and music publisher 5bp, he’s collaborating with Hideo Kojima on a new adventure game. Of course, trying to figure out what the imitable superstar producer is working on at the moment is like trying to crack Fermet’s Last Theorem with a hammer. Feel free to pound away at the conundrum all you want, but be prepared to ultimately not get very far without divine inspiration or an invite into either man’s inner circle. (And Fermet is as dead as Dillinger, so best of luck with that.)
First signs of a collaboration between the two enigmas (Shikura-san is regarded as something of a playboy and hot-topic in Japan) came in the form of a tweet a couple of months back when the coiffed producer claimed to not only be having a working lunch with Kojima-san but also with Goichi Suda (Suda51), CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture (No More Heroes, Killer7), another producer rumoured to be working with Kojima-san on (possibly) an entirely different project altogether.
4Gamer, the Japanese gaming web-site, has since followed up with Shikura-san on what the collaboration might entail. The producer said:
“With regards to the projects that I’m directly involved in, there’s the third entry in that science series, and the project with Konami’s Hideo Kojima. I think these are the two things that I should first put my full effort behind. Kojima said that he wanted to make an adventure game. We’re still at the level of ‘let’s lock ourselves away in the mountains somewhere and work on the plot,’ so the specifics haven’t been finalized.”
It should be noted that “adventure game” in a Japanese context is a “bishōjo” or “gal” game. Difficult to translate into English, the games are probably best described as following the “Choose your own adventure” model, with most gal games focusing on dating sims and some bordering on full-blown hentai. That said, Shikura goes on to express his disinterest in such an approach and is more inclined toward “a classic style adventure,” suggesting something more along the lines of Policenauts or Snatcher, games Kojima is renowned for outside of the Metal Gear universe. Of course, this could be something to do with the game Kojima-san recently hinted he wanted to make that will challenge certain cultural taboos. Only time will tell what this might actually be. If anything at all.
