Activision has been busy showing off the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer mode at an event in Los Angeles – and it’s sounding impressive.
First up is a combat training mode, which can be played offline against bots or with friends. Apparently 30% of COD players never go online; a statistic I can well believe as I’m one of the 30% – if I want to be sassed by a twelve year old I’ll go outside and walk down my local high street.
There is a new ‘Create A Class’ feature, where your character model’s appearance changes depending on which Tier 1 perk you choose.
Supply packages found in game will house some very rare weapons such as the ‘death machine’ machine gun and ‘grim reaper’ rocket launcher. Apparently there’s even a gunship you can fly yourself.
Also new to the game is the introduction of ‘COD Points’ which you earn while you play. These points can be used to purchase abilities, as well as buying Contracts (time-limited challenges).Â
An interesting feature is ‘Wager Matches’, where you can put Cod Points on the line during a match – but only the top three players get any rewards. A video of this is below.
Customisation also plays a role in the multiplayer, and you can tweak your gun – adding your own camo, iron sight and emblems.
Sounds like Treyarch has been busy!

Looks great, I love game modes like that :D
DuffyBox
Wow. Looks fresh and innovative, but will it still feel the same? Either way I’m happy for a bit of variety.
CNWLshadow
These wager matches seem fine until somebody decides to cheat the system or get some friends and “boost”. You then join the match and unfairly loose your COD points.
CNWLshadow
Unless they’ve thought up some genius way to stop this, but I dont hold up much hope.
Bilbo_bobbins
thats a very good point mate, this will be abused massively, like everything else in previous COD games.
tonycawley
Perhaps it’ll be like mercenary team death match where you can’t join as a party, but also can’t join the game via xmb
C_S15
Don’t see why they couldn’t just disable parties getting into that game mode (Just like FFA where only one lone person can enter) and then disabling people to join their session in progress.
AdmiringWorm
I just hope it will be some kind of mercenary wager match, like the mercenary team deathmatch in the mw2(or was it in one of the others).
CNWLshadow
What is needed is a really advanced matchmaking thingy (Mr technical) which analyses your game play and detemines who to match you with based on wheather you run aroung with a rocket launcher or knife etc or play in a civalised manner and doesn’t exploit the game.
Problem sorted, just need to make the thingy.
tonycawley
Using rocket launchers and knives aren’t exploits, they’re perfectly valid tactics, just annoying as hell. Infinity ward put them in there, so using them isn’t exploiting anything, it’s not like it’s a bug or anything is it?
tonycawley
I remember reading about all the new stuff they were doing with mw2 before it was released. Still ended up playing the same as mw though. Same with world at war, just played the same as mw. I’m sure this’ll be the same, adding lots of new stuff and trying to be innovative, but it’ll still end up playing the same, people will still run around using rocket launchers as their main weapon. Hoping they remove akimbo so we don’t get those idiots with 2 shot guns, and hoping they remove both the ability to run stupidly fast and knife someone who’s far away very quickly. Those idiots who run around stabbing you as their main choice of tactics are nobs. So that’s my requests, not really arsed about this other stuff, as long as they remove the things i’ve just mentioned.
Bilbo_bobbins
bang on. All these things ruined the game, they, I believe have removed most of them. Hopefully Akimbo too. I will be waiting to see the reaction of gamers before I go near this. I’m not making the same mistake again.
Voolar
I hate those people. Of course those nobs will just use the Ballistic Knives instead.
Razpacho
I think that video shows a player with akimbo pistols.
iAvernus
No commando, so no knifing across the map. Marathon is there, but it’s not an infinite run, just longer than your standard one.
Akimbo is still there though, but I don’t think I can be used for shotguns…I haven’t seen any footage with Akimbo shotguns, so I could be wrong.
There’s some cool additions, but there’s still shit like tac. insertion. No stopping power, or juggernaut, so everyone’s gun has it’s specific base of damage. No One man army. Noobtubes are back, but with no Danger close, it’ll be less used. There’s allot more additions, but I’m too lazy to write them down now =)
Capruce
IAvernus you beat me here. Everything I was writing then I suddenly look up and there, BAM you’ve written in lol. Yeah Marathon is just like a “boosted extreme conditioning” (from the words of the devs). Yeah noobtubes have been toned down dramatically so I dont think they will be a problem however as the game progresses Im sure people will learn how to use them effectively. It is a COD game so of coarse it will play like its prequels otherwise what would be the point howver I dont see it as just another “improvement game” ie WaW = MW w/ new skin. This game definitely looks like its been built from the ground up.
BrendanCalls
Oh why, oh why. I was just gonna ignore this and continue with MW2 but this looks awesome now. Im not supposed to be buying any Activision games, whiy do they have to go and add some awesome new features that make me wanna part with my cash.
I think my Gran Turismo money might be spent on this instead now
tonycawley
You have gran turismo money?
toutski
You don’t have Gran Turismo money?
tonycawley
Which car’s are on the back of which notes? Got to be the zonda on the back of the 50 doesn’t it? Reliant robin on the back of the 5?
toutski
Yeah, and Veyrons on the £100s.
Severn2j
Really? I mean, Ill be queueing outside Sainsburys on release day, just like with MW2, but my Gran Turismo money is going to Gran Turismo.. Although, probably not the collectors edition I was originally thinking about. :\
toutski
Looks good. I already have this pre-ordered, but cant help thinking that they have gone a bit overboard on the weapons with tomahawks, exploding arrows and remote control cars.
Also from the video it looks like the perks will be similar (Sleight of Hand Pro and Steady Aim Pro), not sure what I expected but I suppose they are trying to freshen it up.
sabbat7001
When I first heard Tomahawk mentioned I thought it was going to be some gun I’d never heard of but no…It’s an F’ing throwing axe. I’m not sure what side of the fence I fall on with it but I’m leaning toward the “that’s just stupid” side. (the other side is “I don’t care anymore”)
C_S15
Looks great! Let’s hope they keep it all balanced and together.
Lot of subtle changes most people won’t pick up on but it looks like a massive improvement on MW2 already.
Bilbo_bobbins
Reasons for not buying after a good watch.
1. Akimbo
2. Rocket Launcher noobness (usual COD antics)
3. One shot hand guns
4. Thermal gun sights
These are just a few reason I wont buy the game. All these will be over used and very annoying.
C_S15
1. They only showed akimbo handguns and akimbo SMGS. Neither were overused or unbalanced in MW2. No akimbo shotguns have been shown and none of the ones shown could feasibly be duel-wielded.
2. Those paticular modes…. You’re only allowed to use the weapon you’re given. Note also that either everyone gets that same rocket launcher or you killed enough people with other guns to work your way up there.
3. That’s only for that paticular game mode because you only have ONE BULLET.
4. Don’t see the problem with thermal, personally. Plenty of ways of countering it =\
Bilbo_bobbins
1. It doesn’t show them, which to me means they are hiding it. IF they have Akimbo then I am pretty sure it will be for shotguns. Hopefully not as that was the most annoying thing in MW2.
2. I have never played in a mode like that, didn’t realise you all get the same gun, cheers.
3. Sounds interesting, but I can’t seem myself playing that mode.
4. Thermal meant camping snipers can sit at the back of a map behind anything and easily take out people. Because of not bullet drop etc, it’s very hard to counter it from the other side of a map when you can’t even see them.
I know there is always way around these things, but you have to admit, MW2 got slated for a reason, and if treyarch have left these in, then it will be as bad as the last one.
C_S15
1. Well they haven’t shown everything so I’m going to presume there’s some sort of super nuke that I can fire from a pistol. Shotguns are now primary weapons so they NEED to be more powerful than in MW2. Powerful shotguns can’t be dual-wielded.
2. The guy explains all the modes in the voice over =)
3. Well you don’t have to play it. I’ve already seen videos of people getting hitmarkers with pistols in TDM so it’s exclusive to that mode.
4. Learn to flank? Look at the killcam? Not hard to do really. In my experience, the red crosshair of thermal makes it too difficult to aim properly.
MW2 got slated for going OTT and not listening to it’s community properly. Everything shown last night points towards Treyarch listening and understanding what people want. Deathstreaks are out. Commando and OMA are out. No more tactical nuke. No Stopping Power anymore. Sounds a bit more like how MW2 SHOULD have been, right?
Bilbo_bobbins
Flanking is easy, I do it all the time. But having a sight that shows everyone up is ridiculous, especially as you can go prone and hide anywhere.
I can’t hear the voice over as I am at work so couldn’t hear that bit, if thats the case then the modes are a good addition. But not what I would buy it for, if I was to go for it. MW2 looked great before it was released, everyone was salivating over it, 2 weeks down the line, most hated it (but still play it for some reason). I gave it up completely. I will be waiting to see what it’s about before Activi$ion get my money because I don’t trust them anymore.
Severn2j
Didn’t the cold blooded perk counter thermal sights?
Daywalker
Yes. Cold blooded stopped Thermal, killsteaks kills (like choppers), and for pro your name would not appear above your head when aimed at. I also hope there are NO BLOODY HEARTBEAT SENSORS. I had to waste my yellow perk spot just to counter these idiots.
Serebii.Net
Erm, Machine Pistols and Shotguns have been confirmed to not be a part of your Secondary Weapon’s..
Treyarch said it gave players too much fire power..
Capruce
@Daywalker
There are no heartbeat sensors however there is the Motion Sensor Equipment which covers a small area and is like a mini uav. As you can see this is severely under powered compared to heartbeat sensors.
@Bilbo_Bobbins
Snipers will be snipers this game is meant to be realistic (to a level) and thats what snipers do, hide and kill without being seen……
Akimbo shotguns would break your arms so thats a no no plus now they’re a primary meaning people will have to rely on a semi automatic or pump action meaning you can counter with a normal assault rifle.
Wager Matches (as seen in the trailer) are a completely separate game type away from the standard MP list of game types. They are free-for-alls and allows the devs at treyarch to do different things such as change damage and so on, the one bullet pistol kill is exclusive to that game.
gazzagb
You can’t judge a game from 1 video explaining the new gamemodes. Ive watched some other videos and the game is looking far more balanced than MW2. The only annoying thing I see is Tactical Insertions, but without the Nuke Killstreak, hopefully, people won’t abuse them.
Rob92
This video and all the details have changed my mind. I’ll definately be buying it now. It sounds awesome, maybe I’ll like this one?
Stripeysocks
Wager mode looks ok but it still feels like an MW2 rip-off
