Sony are slowly refocusing from the current PSP and PSPGo to something else – what that something else is, they would not say but it’s a safe guess it’s a hand held device with a ‘2’ in its name.
Speaking to Gamasutra, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida was asked if the company was ‘winding down’ the PSP and looking towards the future. Yoshida replied,
Yeah, there’s no denying that – it’s about six years since the launch of the PlayStation Portable. When we launched PSP it was the newest, biggest, brightest thing that we had – and after five or six years, and releasing many games, there’s no denying that people start to see that it’s getting a bit old.
In terms of looking at new technology, it’s always the case that as soon as we look at a new platform or new tech, our R&D teams start looking at what’s new in the general space. So yes, we have been looking at new technologies, and looking at the options that we have. It’s not the right time for me to say anything about it.
Still no official announcement for the PSP2 despite sources confirming its existence however the mention of ‘new technologies’ hints that the PSP2 could be arriving with motion sensing and a touch screen. There again it could come with some new software that recognises your cat ,who knows what the tech boffins are looking in to?

Six years is like an ice age in the technology world. I actually think the PSP has done well to stay relevant this long.
It is time for something new though and I’m excited to see what they come up with
Danlord
Totally agree with you there about the relevance of PSP. It certainly is time for Sony to introduce the PSP2 to the market, Sony has got some quality 3rd party support with the likes of Monster Hunter, Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts and more so a jump into the second-iteration of their handheld extravaganza can shape up to be intense, I await the PSP2’s reveal at January CES2011 reveal :)

sure, six yerz iz old for consoles, but not for humanz iz it?!?!?!?!?!?

Danza Di Fuoco E Ghiaccio
Semi PS3 power on the go? let’s see that would be £600 – including recognistion technology and blast processing!!
Wow can’t wait then :)

launch titles must include some form of uncharted and killzone, gta/gt/gow/mgs/lbp would be epic

I wonder if Sony will learn from the likes of the DS? It’s not about the graphics or the horsepower. It’s how you deliver the content and the content itself. Always has been, always will be. Keep the consumer happy.

And what if the consumer, like me wants more power? I agree that Nintendo have marketed well but to say that the success of a console is not relevant is insane, if that were true we would never have moved from the commmodor, or whatever ancient machine came before it.
Marketing is a valid factor but it’s not how you do it, it’s who you do it for. Nintendo have focused on the family and casual markets, Sony focus on those as well as the hardcore gamer. The PSP2 needs more power as well as quirks otherwise it just may as well be the PSP 4000 with touchscreen technology!

* Edit; sorry for the double post but above after ‘relevant’, it should have said ‘to it’s power’.

I’m not sure how I’ve been misconstrued so badly. The PSP has been quite successful but hardly a class winner. The power of the PSP was wonderful. Hell, it still is. However, Sony want to make money and I feel that there’s a way for them to achieve far greater sales if they learn by their mistakes. Nintendo are a good company to look to for successful handhelds. The two modes of thinking aren’t mutually exclusive. Sony can get it right on both counts.
If I might be cheeky, you want more power? That’s fairly important but nowhere near as important as sales. We’ve seen, this generation, that hardware isn’t king. Content and delivery is. Once again, Sony can get it ALL right but the more hardcore users are, sadly, in the minority of sales figures quite often.
The majority want wonderful games delivered in a way that suits them. Sure, we want decent hardware to provide a foundation for that but they already have that with the PSP. Oodles of power and I don’t doubt a PSP2 would be even more powerful. I just feel that Sony should show us how incredible the PSP2 is (as and when the time is right) by not wittering on about the power but how about we’re going to love the new content and how they’re going to get it to us.

Actually, jay, just read that back. None of it is meant to sound like an attack. Read it with a calm and placid voice. Possibly not Stewie’s (avatar). ;-)

I really wouldn’t mind if the graphics stayed the same as before. All I want are some really fun games that won’t break my hand/bank to play them. Hopefully this console will actually be portable like the Go. That’s really what I’m looking for in a PORTABLE gaming system. Hopefully it will not be too big like the 3000 because I can’t carry something of that size in my pocket.

I’m used to it ;)

I do hope sony realises there’s still a place for it. Even with a psp2 on the market. It’s the greatest gaming handheld on the market right now. It’s only now starting to get a foothold again.
