Once again the question of CoD subscription charges has raised its ugly head – despite being shot down a number of times in the past. Activision COO Thomas Tippl had the following to say when asked if CoD could ever emulate the subscription model used by World of Warcraft:
“I don’t think there’s a one size fits all…. There’s no doubt that we are looking to extend recurring revenue models and in many ways we have already accomplished that – even on Call Of Duty, although it takes a different form than subscription.
Every year we have a great game, so every year we have recurring revenues that has a lot of zeros attached to it. We are expanding revenue during the in-between periods with additional content we’ve sold very successfully with map packs.
As we look into the future, there are new and innovative service offerings that could give players more choice. What we’re not going to do is take anything away from players that they used to get today for the price they get it for today. I don’t think that would be a good and smart business decision.
But I think we have a lot in our pipeline that we believe will provide great value for our players. So I think there’s continued opportunity to expand the player base and to provide them with service offerings and products that can also enhance revenue growth.”
Breaking it down slightly, it sounds a bit like PlayStation Plus in as much as you don’t get anything taken away from you, but there are additional perks that you can get by paying a little bit extra. Sounds interesting.

I dont think it would honestly hurt the game as much as long as it doesnt get to the point mentioned above about buying different weapons, BUT, if its like PS+ in the way that you could get map packs at a reduced price etc then i think this could be a fair way to go.

if the game companys do what they have already started to do, they will not only alienate there fanbase but lose custom from the casual gamer and people on lower income. i think that these tac-tics can only lead to an increase in piracy

Bang on. I come from pc gaming and it took me a while to get into next gen console gaming. I never liked paying extra for things that used to be free (dlc for pc used to always be free, take games now like team fortress for instance or maps for counterstrike). I’ve yet to pay for any Dlc on ps3 and don’t plan on it. I chose ps3 over xbox for free online. With ps+ out now and more games starting to come out with dlc on launch I’ve been finding myself playing less and less console games.

The ‘good ol days’ were when developers made money by producing a good game which would sell well, followed by another good game which sold on the reputation of the last.

I love CoD games, play them a lot of the time, I pay stupid amounts for map packs and now they want more. Just need to remember they’re not the only good shooter around and that if they keep doing people like me will be gone to a similar, cheaper game.

Same here man. I admit, I bought map packs, and play the game all the time, but the moment they start charging for better guns/perks/add ons, or whatever, is the moment I stop playing CoD. Way too much good games out there to pay even more for 1 game.

It would have to be decent stuff for me to buy it, PS+ offers nothing that interests me and seems like a rip-off to me. I play COD tonnes, so chances are it would be worth it for me.

Looking a little deeper, either the media are reporting Activison in a better light and not taking comments out of context or Activsion are listening a bit more to what us consumers want a would pay out for. Yes loads of us shelled out for the map packs, the first one was pants, but the second one was better. COD+ does sound like a good idea, but they would have to balance it to that the on-line game doesn’t break like allot of people have mentioned before me.
