CoD Black Ops, Biggest Game Ever?

Activision’s upcoming behemoth Call Of Duty: Black Ops is on track to be the biggest release ever, according to some of the biggest gaming retailers.

First up, HMV’s James Brooks said “We’re seeing some exceptional interest for this title across its different formats. Based on all this initial demand and the huge excitement that’s clearly being generated, I’d say this title has every chance of being the biggest game release ever, and it’s certainly shaping up to become the largest pre-order that we’ve seen in-store and online”.

Joining in the optimism are US retailer GameStop who have previously said “We are ahead of where we were with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last year, which previously set the industry standard”.

Not all retailers are forthcoming with their comments though, but their pre-order charts speak volumes, over on Play.com the Xbox 360 version is top, with the PS3 version taking up second place in the chart, followed in third by the Hardened special edition. This is replicated by GAME’s pre-order chart with again Black Ops taking the two top spots.

The Call Of Duty series is, of course, no stranger to sales records, as last year’s Modern Warfare 2 took just 41 weeks to become the UK’s top selling game of all time, knocking Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training on DS off the top spot with its many years of sales. It also became the fastest selling UK game ever, achieving 1.7m sales in its first week alone, going on to sell 12m copies worldwide.

Black Ops will have it’s work cut out to top last month’s Halo Reach release which incredibly for single platform title took $200m  in the first 24 hours, to become 2010’s biggest entertainment release so far topping the opening weekends of hit movies; Ironman 2, Alice In Wonderland and Toy Story 3.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops is available worldwide on 9th November.

  1. I’m really not at all fussed about this game but now I am wondering if I’ve missed something or there is something wrong with me :\

    • I wonder if Acti/Treyarch are regretting not letting you murder thousands of Russians or play the part of the Taliban in defending their homeland against evil invading US forces?

Both those thing ensured that MW2 and MoH were never out of the news, with new articles being created around the web, on almost every website many, many times a day.

I wonder what this will mean for next year if rival studios compete to include the most questionable content in order to create headlines, publicity & build hype

      • cc_star: “…evil invading US forces”
Dude, you do realize that they consider us “evil” too right?
America does the same exact thing everyone else does.

    • Hype just makes me less likely to like something though. I think it damaged my opinion of MW2 cos I didn’t really enjoy it and I think I was kinda trying not to like it cos of the hype.

  2. No it will not be the worlds biggest game in my opinion. i think that people will get bored with it after 2 months.

    • Why, millions of people still play CoD games, despite all the mega releases that come along

      • Me included im afraid, i still ocassionally have a crack, and thats why ive kept the game and never traded it in…

      • It’s an addiction. :P

    • I don’t think so. I think Treyarch will have more than map packs for dlc. I’m just speculating, but seeing how they’re aiming to be better than MW2, I would only assume that they’ll support it far better than Activision.

  3. Sales; Bigger than ever!
    Price: Higher than ever!
    Campaign mode; Shorter than ever!
    Online players; Crankier than ever!

    • You work for EA? ;-)

    • Your mum, errr, ever!

    • Isn´t the retail price actually below that of Modern Warfare 2 during it’s release?

      • @Nauraph: Not where I live (Oslo) – and, I was just having a rant. Ignore me. ;)

      • Shhh don’t let the facts get in the way of a good point

      • I’m sure they’ll double, perhaps even triple, the prices of the upcomming 20 mappacks! And they’ll be releasing all of them in the first month, with maps from previous titles.

        (That’s better, right?)

  4. I bought Modern Warfare 2 on the release and I’m actually still playing it pretty often. I don’t believe Black Ops will get boring in 2 months.
    I won’t pre-order it though.

    • i was bored of mw2 after a couple of weeks so i sold it and got 3DDGH

i still play cod4 though infact i played it last night

  5. What a load of rubbish. Wii Play is at 27 million and Wii Fit is at 22 million sold and neither is a pack-in.

    • errrrm… accessories

      • Yeh but what about that game. Um… The Bible. Sold billions! Ner! *sticks tongue out at cc*

  6. I’m just interested to see how it turns out this time under Treyarch. World at War had a great single player campaign, but I didn’t like the online stuff. This time they look to have taken all the good stuff from MW2 online modes and ramped it up a notch.

  7. I haven’t pre-ordered Black Ops yet, as I’m planning on getting it in Sainsbury’s or Tescos and hoping they do a good deal on it.
I know that quite a few of my mates are planning on doing exactly the same thing, so this game could easily smash MW2’s records.

    • I will now take the failure or success of all forthcoming titles based on you and your mates. Seriously, it’s probably no less accurate either. Also, I want gazzagb reviews. None of this marks out of ten bollocks, just a simple photo of the Fonz or Jade Goody to let us know if it’s worth getting or not.

      • I love reading your replys to comments mike!

      • I’m glad someone does. I haven’t got a bloody clue what I type. 8-)

      • Who the f**k is ‘the Fonz’!? O_o

  8. I would never have bought this game, modern warfare was and still is terrible for it’s online and short story. full of children and adults who should know better. imo battlefield bad company 2 is a much better online experience, and MOH may be similar.

Having said that peer pressure has struck as I am getting black ops, but on the 360 (which I hate) just to play with my friends, who are all too cheap to get a PS3.

    • I agree. Battlefield BC2 is such a better game than COD MW2, yet no one I know bought it and ‘forces’ me to play COD instead od it. Now I HAVE to get Black Ops as well. That’s my excuses out the way anyway.

  9. I feel like the only person not getting it.

  10. I wasnt going to get this, untill i saw the changes for online Multiplayer
1 – Killstreaks kills no longer contribute to your next killstreak
2 – Stopping power perk removed
3 – Quicker Scoping no longer works fro sniper rifles
4 – night vision googles are back

    • Small changes that could add up to a big difference.

Abusers of perks put me off MW2, but the real reason is probaby because I hit the limit of my ability after week or two and everyone else just kept getting better, leaving me to have a sulk and trade it in

    • Have they got rid of double shotgun and heat sensors yet? The two biggest causes of me throwing a wobbly mid game.

    • I don’t have a fast internet connection, this sucks, but ironically it is the fastest in my country, its too slow to play online,so in my opinion ,if it does not have a offline co-op and the campaign is as short as it was in MW2,then i can guarantee that i wont get this game now or in the future unless my internet magically gets faster before the game comes out.
