Sunday Thoughts: PlayStation Plus

It has certainly been an interesting few months for PlayStation Plus. When it was first announced I could see the potential, but I could also see the big fat elephant in the room; what if paying Plus subscribers already have the content being given away for free?  Sure enough when month one started there was an influx of “got that, got that, THIS SUCKS!” that could be heard in forums across the land.

It’s a fair point though; as a paying subscriber shouldn’t you be entitled to something you actually want?  I was in seventh heaven though, because as a total utter stingy git I had none of what was being given away, as I tend to hoard my money like a mistrustful Dwarf.  The cries haven’t died out though as the months have gone on, to the point where the team at Sony must be feeling lower than the bumper on a boy racers Nova – a point that EU Blog man James Gallagher seems to agree with:

” I sometimes feel like I could announce the apocalypse and a few of you would be underwhelmed!”

This was said the day that it was announced Plus members would be getting ALL Fallout 3 DLC for free.  What I thought was an amazing deal seemed to ignite Twitter into a frenzy of “how DARE you get our hopes up over this crap”.  The same can be said for the much touted Plus demos and beta access.

We got the Mafia II demo a day early, which annoyed people as it was just a day; we got the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood beta a week early, which annoyed people as they wanted a Plus only beta; so then we got the big one – the Killzone 3 beta, almost exclusive to PlayStation Plus.  As soon as this was announced I saw people literally cursing Sony’s name for making it a Plus only affair.

So we want Plus only betas…that are available to everyone…but not?  Heck I’m confused, and I bet Sony are too, which leads me to ask – will Sony ever be able to please everyone?  It seems that now there are Plus and non Plus people Sony can do no right.  Do you subscribe?  If so have you been happy with the items made available to you?

  1. the only negative for me is the automatic download feature, which I don’t use anymore because it downloads things already on your hard drive (littlebigplanet lol) there should just be an option to download everything in the background.

  2. Subscribed on day one and was disappointed with the first couple of months’ PS+ content as I tend to buy a lot from the store and already had it. But since then Sam & Max and the Fallout DLC means my subscription has now paid for itself so any more content is pure bonus.

Don’t think much of the auto download feature though. It needs to look deeper into your playing history. The number of time I still have to download a patch before I can play a game is still too high.

  3. Gamers sense of entitlement is what sucks

In short: Everytime something is announced whether it’s good or bad, people’s reaction confirms my long-held suspicion that people are arseholes

  4. They should have just left it as it was so that we where all equals ! Theres a kind of class divide now with the PS+ rich kids and the rest of us paupers .
I see comments from subscribers saying things like “i thought this was a PS+ beta only” its like some tory toff saying “euughh they are letting some working class into our 1st class carriage” !

    • lol I see that, actually the first thing that comes to mind when someone on my friends list has that little gold cross is “posh tw@”

    • Right on comrade!

Think of it like a union membership if it’s more palatable, anyone who pays gets benefits

  5. I’m not a subscriber to either plus, or gold for that matter, because I don’t see the point. Discounts and early access to betas and demos is all well and good, but in the 3 years i’ve had a PS3 i’ve bought about 10 games, which doesn’t exactly break the bank. Also what’s the point in being given something for free to only have it taken off of you if you unsubscribe?

For Plus to be worthwhile they need to add services rather than pushing store content I wouldn’t buy anyway. The store stuff should be extra benefits with services being the main reason for the subscription and not the other way round. With that in mind the only thing currently worthwile about plus is background patching and since it’s by no means an essential service i’ll pass.

  6. i think the Plus service wasn’t marketed correctly: the service, at least as it is, is not for the hardcore gamers.
I still think Plus is a great deal, but only for casual gamers or the hardcore ones that don’t spend that much money in games.

They sold us Plus as a service that would bring exclusives and discounts and all that, but the fact is most of the things they release are based in products already available. Hence, a very good service for casual/not so wealthy gamers.

I think most of those that subscribed day one were hardcore players wanting to have exclusive deals in new games, betas and what not, and in that sense Sony failed them. Not that Killzone 3 isn’t one well a beta (i wish i had it), and there are plenty of good games (Fallout DLC is super!), but those consumers are already scarred by the first months of a “bad experience”.

Myself? I would love to have Plus, they just haven’t given away that piece of content that would turn me. If only i hadn’t bought already the DLC…

  7. i was a day 1 subscriber and will be resubscribing next year in june, i hvant seen anything that i already own and im throughouly enjoying all the games and DLC so far, and im excitied about the KZ3 beta which ill defo be in. although this months was very poor hopefully nov will be good and dec. but all i need now it fallout 3…

  8. I will not be subscribing, to me its just an over expensive rental service which because I dont like 90% of the psn’s content i wouldnt use, i have spent £20 on psn over the last 2 years so psn plus is definetely not for me

  9. I signed up to try out till December 22nd (i think) and I like it so far, if I still like the content I will be purchasing the 1 year subscription.

  10. I subscribed more or less from day one and I’ve saved a fortune, especially with things like the fallout dlc that I might not have bothered with otherwise…
