Will The Press Dent Black Ops Success?

Quite an interesting statement has sprung forth from the mouth of Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.  On the subject of Call of Duty: Black Ops not being able to surpass Modern Warfare 2 he had the following to say:

“The challenge is that Treyarch is called the ‘other’ Call of Duty developer for a reason; the top review scores for the franchise on gamerankings.com are held by Infinity Ward games, with Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, the original Call of Duty, and Call of Duty 2 each receiving average scores of 89 or higher.

The best reviewed Call of Duty game from Treyarch is World at War, which received an 85.7% score, while Call of Duty 3 got an 82% rating.

I don’t know whether the gaming press will suddenly become more charitable than they have in the past, but my read on them as a group is that they are a hypercritical and bitter lot, and I think that they have the potential to find many things wrong with Black Ops, chief among them that the game is not Modern Warfare 2.”

Now my initial thought was “up yours Pachter”, but he does have a point in terms of Modern Warfare 2.  How many reviews for Medal of Honor bleated on about Infinity Ward’s phenomenally successful shooter?  Quite a few!  No doubt Black Ops will suffer a similar fate.

With Black Ops pre-orders through the roof though I don’t think even us twisted, bitter old farts could get in the way come November – and our ‘hypocrisy’ certainly did Medal of Honor no harm.

  1. Considering the amount of hype going around for Black Ops I think Treyarch are going to be quite happy, even if it doesn’t surpass MW2.

  2. i couldnt stand mw2 online. im hoping treyarch will discared mw2s so called improvements and make a welcoming game

  3. this is all BS anyway, the COD series is clearly most reviewers favourite thing… just pisses me off, that every game gets compared to it even tho games like MOH are clearly better in places…

  4. reviews don’t change a game

  5. This guy’s theories often seem like pot luck when he’s right…Treyarch Were the other developers, but now they seem to be the main man it seems they want to make as good as they can. Sounds like they’ve implemented a few changes, some minor, but enough to change annoying things that were in MW2 multiplayer. And if they can make single player a bit of a balance between the drama of MW1 and over the top nonsense of MW2 they’re onto a winner.

  6. I don’t feel that Treyarch CoD games should get less glory than Infinity Ward CoD games.

First of all, probably the only reason why IW CoD games do have more publicity over Treyarch Cod games, is simply because people like the whole ‘Modern’ time behind them. This is also weird, seeing as how Mw2 has heartbeat sensors…heh.

Second, ‘Black Ops’ has sold just fine with just the pre-orders, so I don’t see the reason to get upset about false ratings anyway.

    Long live Treyarch!
