Will The Press Dent Black Ops Success?

Quite an interesting statement has sprung forth from the mouth of Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.  On the subject of Call of Duty: Black Ops not being able to surpass Modern Warfare 2 he had the following to say:

“The challenge is that Treyarch is called the ‘other’ Call of Duty developer for a reason; the top review scores for the franchise on gamerankings.com are held by Infinity Ward games, with Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, the original Call of Duty, and Call of Duty 2 each receiving average scores of 89 or higher.

The best reviewed Call of Duty game from Treyarch is World at War, which received an 85.7% score, while Call of Duty 3 got an 82% rating.

I don’t know whether the gaming press will suddenly become more charitable than they have in the past, but my read on them as a group is that they are a hypercritical and bitter lot, and I think that they have the potential to find many things wrong with Black Ops, chief among them that the game is not Modern Warfare 2.”

Now my initial thought was “up yours Pachter”, but he does have a point in terms of Modern Warfare 2.  How many reviews for Medal of Honor bleated on about Infinity Ward’s phenomenally successful shooter?  Quite a few!  No doubt Black Ops will suffer a similar fate.

With Black Ops pre-orders through the roof though I don’t think even us twisted, bitter old farts could get in the way come November – and our ‘hypocrisy’ certainly did Medal of Honor no harm.

  1. “hypercritical and bitter lot”

    That’s me.

    • He missed out “Devoted worshipper at the Chapel of Apple” :D

  2. He’s a dick. It’s clearly gonna break all records. Even my nan could tell you that.

    • really? She just told me she hates COD and prefers Killzone?

  3. I think Treyarch, no matter what they do, will be known as the other dev for the Call of Duty series. But I think this will actually be an advantage to them and to us, from what I see of them they are trying hard to listen to what we want in the game and are trying harder to beat Infinity Ward. I also think it will get slightly negative reviews from some people, but ultimetly it will be a huge success. I can see it surpasing MW2.

  4. I always had the opinion that Treyarch were the other lot, the not so good studio. Call of duty 3 was awful. However after the support for W@W I began to change slightly. It had amazing stat tracking the iPhone app was good and the support was good. Now with Black Ops looking a solid game i think Treyarch could finally shake the ‘other studio’ title and show what they are truly capable of.

    • Exactly this.. W@W was the first COD imo that they got right and even that game got flak because they chose to stick with WWII.. I don’t think the press will dent Black Ops sales tho as any COD game will sell by the bucketload regardless..

    • To be honest, single player wise, CoD 3 was my favorite.

  5. I much prefer Treyarch to the populist arcade shallow drivel that the other lot produce.

All evidence points to Black Ops being the biggest game release ever, even Pachter himself has predicted that umpteen times

  6. I reckon only 10% of MW2 customers know about Infinity Ward and Treyarch and their differences. It’ll make little impact to the sales.

    • Agreed, considering 80% of the players online must be 13 and got their mums to buy it!

    • I totally agree with this, the great majority of the public don’t really know or care about the behind the scenes of gaming, the thing that made MW2 such a success (apart from being a great game) was the fact it had the Call of Duty title, and Black Ops will enjoy a similar benefit.

    • I couldn’t tell you the difference thats for sure, im such a floozie that I would buy any good game from any Dev

  7. I think he forgets an awful lot of us thought MW2 was a pile over hyped crap. After the destruction of Infinty Ward Treyarch are THE COD Developer, not ‘The other’.

    Also he’s a tit.

    • He can’t be – I like tits.

  8. He actually covers his arse at the end of his statement by saying BO could outsells MW2 as there are more consoles now than there was last year. Thanks, Captain Obvious.

  9. I believe Treyarch will provide better support than IW did, but for me they’ve done themselves no favours by making the game look so similar to MW2, even the waypoint markers are the same for example, and they’ve kept the same addictive number crunching that MW2 pulled off without anyone noticing.

I still find it highly annoying that the CoD franchise does so ridiculously well in comparison to other titles. I understand why people love the games, but relatively speaking in terms of sales and playtime it doesn’t deserve to be so far out in front every time.

    • Yeah, I totally agree.

I have a few friends that only ever play CoD online. I try to lure them away with the delights of Bad Company 2’s multiplayer but they won’t have it because they love the familiarity.

  10. Patcher is a CNUT**

    **Mis-spelt to soften the blow………

    • Pachter – damn th-iphone hahaha
