We’ve already been over the next Call of Duty’s multiplayer features, but official word this morning is that the game will support split-screen single console online multiplayer, but there’s a caveat on PS3: anyone wanting to play online split-screen multiplayer with a mate will only be able to sign in the second player as a temporary guest, not under their own PSN profile.
“You can connect a second controller and bring a guest online,” says the US Blog, which details lots of other additions to the multiplayer. This means, for example, if you’re signed into the PSN as “nofi” then the second player must be “nofi(1)” rather than their own PSN profile.
This obviously also means that the progress of the guest will be lost when you sign out, although you can “rank up” and “earn unlocks”.
Confusingly, a lot of the earlier comments in the Blog article are celebrating the ability to sign in as two different PSN accounts, so I’m assuming the text of the article changed after a couple of hours (probably around about comment 114) as the tone of the comments certainly changed to reflect the news above as the facts started to trickle in and required an edit to the new.
Of course, you can have two players playing split-screen online on an Xbox 360, but only if they’re both paying Gold customers. I guess you get what you pay for, as this is a PSN limitation, not something Activision or Treyarch are responsible for.

A user just made this comment on the US Blog:
“David’s twitter has been updated to say it’s a PSN issue and he is looking into it with the engineering department, and that it may take some time.
Maybe it will be patched in after release. Maybe they need to talk more with Sony about how it can be done.”
Looks like there is still hope. Fingers crossed.
Unfortunately (fortunately?) that kills my conspiracy theory…

Erm wasn’t there a ps3 update just so resistance 2 could have split screen online with two accounts?
AJ
Indeed it was.

Maybe we’ll get an update in the future (although it’s already possible in other games) to allow two different profiles.
Or maybe the multiple ID is a premium feature as the only two games that I can think of are first party. (LBP & Resistance 2)

I own all the current systems and this has been the biggest disappointment for me. I just realized that you cannot sign in to 2 profiles on the PS3. My wife and I play tons of games online together while signed in to our xbox live accounts. I just brought NBA 2k11 for the PS3 and I am starting to regret the decision. I have 3 copies of MW2 for my 360s and I can play campaign in split screen and receive achievements but cannot do the same on my MW2 on my ps3. Sony needs to get this fixed pronto. I will definitely buy 2 copies of Black Ops so that my kids can play on their 360 and my wife and I on ours.

It’s great they implemented split screen online.
The guy that facked up the blog message should be fired though. Wadda mistaka to maka!
