In what is almost certainly an industry first, Sega is making Football Manager 27 free to play for a long weekend just ahead its full launch. That’s right, the FM27 Launch Preview will be freely playable on PC and Mac instead of being locked behind a pre-order bonus.

From 6PM GMT on 29th October through 6PM GMT on 3rd November, you can drop into FM27 Launch Preview via Steam, Epic, Microsoft Store, and PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate (on PC). No sign-ups, no in-game limitations, no pre-orders, just download and play.

The full game will then launch on 10th November for all launch platforms, but there is a further paid Launch Preview play window for those that pre-order. You saves can carry forward to either of those.

It’s a move that’s loosely equivalent to a big server stress test, or game demo with save carry-forward, or the free play weekends that tend to appear (sometimes as a PS Plus bonus) a few months after launch. However, the scale and scope of this is on another level.

And it’s no secret why Sega and Sports Interactive are doing this. Football Manager 26 was a right old mess, as the venerable series jumped to a new engine and to new navigational ideas. It went down like a lead balloon, both with critics and fans. So SI has to build back trust with its community, and prove to them that they’ve taken on board all the feedback and made improvements.

SI has also shared a plethora of gameplay videos and explorations, showing how the navigation has been improved, removing clicks where possible and clarifying the customisable menu structure, following that with a journey into the deepening world of the football simulation, improving the match day experience and more.

Looking back on our review of FM26, Aran said, “Football Manager 26 is the first step of a new era, and as we’re seeing with some of the biggest clubs in the country, any new era comes with the challenge of rebuilding and both setting and meeting expectations. Football Manager 26 can get better with updates, but I doubt that this entry will be the one to make the most of the switch to the new engine, overhauled UI and new features. It might take one or two more years for this rebuild to really meet its potential.”
