The Next Battlefield Is Free-To-Play

Ben Cousins from EA has been in London town showing off the new Battlefield title. This has been kept under wraps and will be officially unveiled tomorrow. Earlier today there was a big event down at the 02 when the game was shown to the press with the likes of MTV in attendance.

Obviously our invite was lost in the post so we know little about the game but we do know one thing – the next Battlefield will be free to play. This evening Ben has been speaking on the London Games Conference and said he is “working on a new Battlefield that is hi-def, free to play, and will truly disrupt the traditional mode.”

The game is HD so it’s going to be either PC, XBox 360 or PS3 – or all three. Could this be the first free-to-play console shooter? Well if MTV are covering it then it may just be and EA announcing a free-to-play console Battlefield title would grab some of those headlines away from Black Ops. Of course it may be another PC game but EA already have a free-to-play PC Battlefield title.

Tomorrow could be very interesting…

  1. the next Battlefield title, cant they give us a release date for BFBC2 Vietnam, or Battlefield 3 before they entice us with yet another BF title. I love Dice but lately IMO they have really bitten off more than they can chew.

    • thats a gd description for moh
      chewed up & spat out

  2. I still don’t understand why everyone is so bananas over the fact that other games may take away publicity and/or awareness of Black Ops.

The game is clearly successful enough, I’m sure it can due without some attention.

  3. Not hugely impressed with this news, likewise I wasn’t impressed that BF3 is on consoles at all.

Heroes sucks, simple as that and 2142s adverts worked fine in game, but that didn’t make it free, so micro transactions sounds about right even if it is bloody annoying.

It’s difficult enough to get game balance right without throwing people with limitless funds into the equation.
