The Next Battlefield Is Free-To-Play

Ben Cousins from EA has been in London town showing off the new Battlefield title. This has been kept under wraps and will be officially unveiled tomorrow. Earlier today there was a big event down at the 02 when the game was shown to the press with the likes of MTV in attendance.

Obviously our invite was lost in the post so we know little about the game but we do know one thing – the next Battlefield will be free to play. This evening Ben has been speaking on the London Games Conference and said he is “working on a new Battlefield that is hi-def, free to play, and will truly disrupt the traditional mode.”

The game is HD so it’s going to be either PC, XBox 360 or PS3 – or all three. Could this be the first free-to-play console shooter? Well if MTV are covering it then it may just be and EA announcing a free-to-play console Battlefield title would grab some of those headlines away from Black Ops. Of course it may be another PC game but EA already have a free-to-play PC Battlefield title.

Tomorrow could be very interesting…

  1. Hmm, its going to be interesting to see how they generate revenue from a free-to-play game. It could work, depends on their model.

    • Think they have in game purchases on their battlefield heroes game that’s free to play. Played it for a little while hard to play on a laptop though lol

  2. A free game :O lol. Nothing’s free these days ¬.¬

  3. All eyes on here tomorrow. Free to play, but you start with a spud hun and fart bombs. To upgrade to real weapons, you can buy them for loadsa money!

    • Spud gun not spud hun. Bloody germans get everywhere!

      • But whatever you do, dont mention the war…

  4. My guess is that this’ll be run on a micro-transaction model. The game itself will be free; but for extra add-ons, you’ll have to fork out cash for it.

  5. If MTV are involved then maybe by lots of adverts in game and maybe showings of The Hills as you wait to respawn

    • MTV have interviewed Ben. I can’t see them being interested in a PC game tbh.

  6. free? hmm… well lets see what happens!

  7. Ah… I just thought when he said “free to play” that he meant they won’t have monthly subscriptions.. .I mean with all the talk about CoD going subscription, and that Battlefield would stay the same as always… oh well :p

    • Free to play as as in Free to play online and wil cost you zero pence to buy.

      • There was an event. With minor celebs….. And TC didn’t get an invite? It must be a chilly day in hell!

      • I know. Shocking.

  8. What ever it is, it’ll be brilliant, and free stuff always is nice!

  9. I am waiting with an open chequebook , as an unashamed Battlefield fanboy i will buy everything as long as its an FPS as opposed to a terrible 3rd person shooter like the Battlefield Heroes experiment.

    • Battlefield 2142 and bad company 2 are the only battlefield games I’ve played but they easily trounce call of duty, I’m really eager to see what they announce, and willing to get my card ready.

      • Back in the day Battlefield 1942 and the huge mod scene where just out of this world . Battlefield Vietnam was brilliant too , im going to love the up coming BFV expansion but 1ike 1943 it wont have the magic of its predecessor though im sure i will be playing it for the next 6 months at least .
No Black Ops for me , had enough of the series and more so the players. It was amazing on PC (single player) and Cod4 wasn’t bad but since then its become the choice of the casual gamer along with FIFA and Need for Speed.
The best thing about Black Ops that i can say is it keeps all the underclasses in one place and away from the uppercrust games of Battlefield ;)
I am a freaking weirdo in that i cannot purchase or like what the masses are buying/listening to /playing /watching ! Never have and never will own an Apple product , never seen the x-factor , Dont think Michael Mcyintyre is funny . Its why i ended up getting a PS3 because the Xbox was so popular in the UK 3 years ago.

      • I reached lvl 50 a while back, but the game keeps on giving, the battles just feel a lot more real than cod ever will and that’s what keeps drawing me in, I’m hooked on the game. I love getting platinum stars on it as well.
Haha yeah, I’m getting black ops, but I’m agreed with you there ;)
The only problem I have is that on a couple of maps everyone just plays as a recon and doesn’t go forward, and I’m left to fight the battle by myself. 4 vs 12 is pretty unfair.
I’ve had a 360 since launch day but it’s shared with my brother and sister, and I never use it anyway. It was just to tide me over until the ps3. I also have an iPod touch and I use this constantly, but I detest apple as a company and some of the ways they Market their products, they’re extremely expensive for what they are.
I bloody hate macintyre and x factor as well!

  10. Come on guys!!! This is EA, they would bill the Egyptians for sand if they could
