TSA’s Top 100 of 2011 – #58 Battlefield 3

EA DICE’s long-running and multi-million selling war game series, Battlefield has manifested itself over its long history as a WWII title, a Vietnam based romp and even a futuristic shooter. As a franchise it’s renowned for being diverse, meticulously crafted, and always eager to incorporate new things into an already impressive armoury of features.

Though Battlefield vets might spend their well-earned (hopefully tequilla fuelled and señorita filled) nights reminscing about 1942, it’s the series’ later campaigns that modern gamers will likely identify more with.

Bad Company 2 became an almost act of defiance against Modern Warfare 2; gamers who were disappointed with Activision’s vanguard shooter gravitating toward BC2 with an almost religious zeal. That’s not to suggest any spiteful, unfounded favouritism was on show here. Many consider BC2’s squad-based dynamic and vehicular combat mechanics superior to MW2’s own particular brand of warfare. It did create a schism among shooter fans, however, and it’s hard to argue that dyed-in-the-wool fans of either title rarely have a kind word for the other.

Little is known about Battlefield 3 other than the fact that it will use DICE’s Frostbite 2.0 engine (so expect environments to explode even prettier than before) and those who picked up the Tier 1 Limited Edition of EA’s new-kid-on-the-chopping-block, Medal of Honor, will receive an invite to Battlefield 3’s beta “within a year of MoH’s release date.” Just another eleven months to wait, then.

Just like there are comic fans on staff here at TSA there are also those of use who really enjoy shooting both friends and strangers alike in the face online with an assortment of weaponry. The Battlefield series has been the gold standard of online shooters. It may exist slightly in the shadows of Activision’s seemingly unstoppable media-magnet behemoth, Call of Duty, but to those in the know, and for those of us who prefer our action with a little more strategic meat on its bones, there’s some good killin’ here.

  1. Why does noone ever mention modern combat on ps2? That was awesome online.

  2. Damn you minerwilly you beat me too it I’ve known for weeks about the new maps but still no real date. seen 1 date saying December 30th but not sure how true it is.

  3. Never a fan of the Battlefield games I’ve played.

There’s huge problems with spawn points and lack of vehicles in BF1943 & BF:BC2 meaning it can take 5mins to run all the way across a map, only to get picked off by a sniper and have to attempt it again, or just quit of course. It’s easy to sort as all they need to do is have a vehicle blow up if its not been used for a minute and reappear at its own spawn point.

I’m disappointed I’ve not played MoH yet as I was waiting for a post-release pricedrop, but I’m not sure I’ll get chance now as CoD is so damn awesome offline & online.

    • From what i have heard MoH is far too similar to CoD so im not touching it , sounds like it might be more your cup of tea.

      • Moh has much more in common with battlefield than cod in my opinion. Especially on the larger maps. Some of the smaller maps i can kinda see your point though.

  4. Fair point but there are pros and cons to having massive maps and 1 of the new maps is even bigger than any of the others. Rented black ops was ok but not a buyer for me. Next on my list is gt5

  5. I used to play Battlefield 2 on the PC but I could never get into it. However, I have a beta code for BF3 so it’s worth giving it a shot.

  6. It was battlefield modern combat on the 360 that got me into battlefield games, man that was something special, i like BF series better than cod because the maps are bigger and the vehicles.

  7. I am seriously looking forward to this, I still play Battlefield 2 on PC to this day. The Bad Company console games were also great especially 2 but they did lose some of the scale found in Battlefield 2, no jets for starters.

  8. oh hell yeah Battlefield Bad Company 1 & 2 were pretty fun i can’t wait to see what the new engine will produce hopefully some metal gear like graphics!!

  9. ive never played a full battlefield (not bad company)release, ive played bc 1&2 and also got 1943, but am looking forward to playing a console battlefield

  10. I love both the BF and COD franchises. I don’t get why people assume you can only play one or the other – they’re both great franchises with distinct differences, and it’s far more enjoyable to play both of them.
