TSA’s Top 100 of 2011 – #47 Lego Star Wars III

The Legoification of renowned cultural icons continues unabated. Batman, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, H from Steps – nothing is safe from this unmerciful blocky scourge.

Star Wars, the first property to fall to the cuboid plague, is also probably the most famous in Traveller’s Tales’ humourous takes on some of our more popular franchises. First came the mute, slapstick rendition of Episodes I through III, then a most-welcomed original trilogy outing that showcased just what a developer entrusted with two apparently contrasting brands – the age-old joy of Lego brick building and the modern phenomenon that is George Lucas’ opus – can do when gameplay is elevated above both underlying licences.

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars is named after the eponymous cartoon series. In essence, it’s a full game based on a period in the Star Wars universe when Obi-wan nipped out to the toilet and all hell broke loose in the Republic. Creating an interstitial tale between Episodes II and III – the dreaded interquel – is all well and good, but it does smack a little of riding the cash cow to the market, slicing off steaks from her back as you go. Regardless of the legitimacy of The Clone Wars entity in the wider Star Wars canon, we’re quietly confident Traveller’s Tales will continue with their tradition of creating charming, masterfully crafted parodies of Star Wars’ themes, somehow managing to be irreverent without lampooning the beloved franchise.

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars will be released in Europe on all consoles, handhelds and the PC on February 18th.

  1. How the heck did this beat at least a few of the games in the 50-100 section?!

    • Jedi mind trick?
      :)

The question is: have you ever played a Lego game?

      • Yeah, I have lego star wars :) Thoroughly enjoyable, but I don’t know how it beat the likes of battlefield 3 and witcher 2. Still, it’s a democracy and the people have spoken :P

      • All it takes is a couple of people not into RPGs or shooters and both those games slip down the pecking order. Trust me, they exist (and on this team!)
        :)

      • I’m one of them

      • It’s all about the local co-op with the Lego games, second to none this generation I reckon.

    • 15 people voted on stuff, some of which captured people’s imagination more than others. There’s a broad range of people writing for TSA and some games positioning on the list reflects that range of people very well.

Some surprising stuff probably never made it in to the top 100, some stuff probably did surprisingly very well. That’s the beauty of having a range of votes rather than the list just reflecting one person’s tastes.

    • That was my thoughts as well. Own up, who voted for this?

  2. Loved 1 and 2, but since im not a fan of the Clone Wars, im not buying this

  3. My son loves those games, so it’s great for us parents to have something kids can play safely, and we can have some fun playing with them too. It’s funny the way that he’s getting to know Batman, Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Harry Potter without even seeing the originals. I wonder how will he react when he watches the movies or read the books/comics.

    • Don’t let him read Death in the Family. Scarred for life!
      :)

  4. Haven’t thoroughly played a LEGO game since the original LSW. I may pick this up beings I know very little about the Clone Wars series, and the LEGO games are great for drop-in multiplayer.

  5. I want to buy the full saga one, but not this one.

  6. I’ll get this one, I loved the original LEGO Star Wars games so this should be just as awesome!

  7. I love all things Lego; I was really hoping this would be out before Christmas. Still waiting on a Lego Pixar game (especially as you can buy Toy Story Lego and Cars Duplo).

    • The Toy Story 3 game is rather good. Not that I#m trophy whoring it or anything.

      • Yeah, I was quite suprised. Got the platinum and 90% of the time I was really enjoying it (little big of a slog near the end). The campaign is a little short but there are loads more little missions in toy box mode.
