Yamauchi Wanted A Free-Roam Mode For GT5

In a series of Tweets this afternoon Polyphony Digital boss Kaz Yamauchi has been answering fan questions on Gran Turismo 5 in a remarkably candid manner.

Picked up and translated over at NeoGAF, the studio head says that, amongst other things, he’d have liked to have a free roam mode where the player would have to stick to the rules of the roads (obeying traffic lights, for example) and get could leave the car and browse the shops.

Yamauchi also says that the reason head tracking doesn’t work outside of Arcade mode is due to memory issues, that renumeration for online play is “under consideration” and that mechanical damage should appear in the next update.

Assuming, of course, that the translations are accurate enough.

  1. So it would be GTA:Gran Turismo editon.

Okay who here would stick to the rules if there was a free roam, i wouldn’t.

  2. I bet you could spend hours in a ‘free roam’ mode obeying the rules of the road, especially if there are pedestrians to run over.

    • They’d be quite easy to run over, just stood there, completely frozen static with their arms raised in the air

  3. YES!!! Just had my question answered by the man himself I’m off to go unlock the sebastien vettel challenge

  4. I can honestly say I would have gladly waited an extra year for GT5 if this mode was in it. I used to drive around in Burnout Paradise at the speed limit and obeying traffic lights.. I love it!

    • Is this some kind of British humour us Aussies don’t get?

  5. Forget that and get working on Tourist Trophy!

  6. it would be interesting to see a shop withing Playstation Home where you can use GT5 credits to purchase cars from Home’s store or dearlerships if you will. That way i mean you won’t drive a car, but you’ll be able to use your character to walk around and check out the cars from the outside if you wanted to add it to your garage you could take it for a ride. that’s my idea!

    • I think your going to be able to walk around showrooms etc. with your avatar in Test Drive Unlimited 2.
At least that was the impression I got from the last video I saw.

  7. I hate to be picky, but isn’t it “reMuNeration”

  8. That said… He wanted something like a Test Drive, only more realistic… He could do a new IP tough. In a Gran Turismo, that might not be the best idea.
