“Tomb Raider” Announced By Square Enix

Earlier today, Japanese publishing giant Square Enix revealed the next instalment of the Tomb Raider series which will appear in January’s issue of Game Informer. Simply titled “Tomb Raider” the game is being handled by Crystal Dynamics and will follow the adventures of a much younger, inexperienced Lara Croft after her ship is wrecked on the coast of a mysterious island.

After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive

“Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider,” said Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio. “This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.”

One of the key focuses in the newest Lara Croft adventure is the emphasis on survival, though how this will be integrated into the existing TR gameplay hasn’t been touched on. Here is a cover shot of next month’s GI magazine:

  1. As long as its better than underworld…..

    • I played Underworld all the way through and actually thought it was a neat game. The whole survival element they wish to introduce has me cautious, but as long as it isn’t like Resident Evil 5, then I’m down.

    • For me, Underworld was a great game with the exception of the camera and bugs which should have been patched really.

      • I completely agree with you, it just felt to me that if they had worked on it a little longer to iron out the bugs it would have been fantastic – but it was a thoroughly enjoyable game. Looking forward to seeing what this name game will be like.

      • I also think Underworld was great but i hated the section with the “water” that kills you if you touch it and if memory serves me right the biggest problem there was the camera.

    • I really enjoyed Underworld :) Never understood why people like to complain about it.

      • I liked Underworld, but Anniversery and Legend were so much better. Underworld has worse animations (at least worse animation transition. When I was mid-air and grabbed a ledge, she freezes for a moment, twitches and then grabs the ledge) than those two. And, combat sucks if compared to any of those. Instead of jumps and dodges as special attacks, we have headshots! Why couldn’t they mix the both? And having to go to your PDA to switch guns is a pain. You should be able to pick them from the floor. Nevertheless I liked the game

      • Also, I kept jumping because of the goddamn giant spiders. GRR, I hate those.

      • I managed to play through it then 2 weeks after…. trophies were introduced and i couldnt face playing it again.

For me it wasnt Tomb Raider, the puzzles were too easy, and was too meh for me….I feel Uncharted has taken Tomb Raiders torch now.

  2. Really nice idea for the franchise. Interested to see what becomes of it.

  3. What to do with a flailing franchise? Do a prequel! Could be a good move. I will certainly keep an eye on this.

  4. Yay. As long as it doesn’t have Zombies and become a survival horror on a tropical island – everything has blimmin’ Zombies in it nowadays.

    • ‘Mysterious’ island is forewarning for all types of undead shenanigans.

    • Haven’t seen any zombies yet in Gran Turismo, or AC Brotherhood, or F1, or Black ops…. oh, hang on….

  5. I think this is actually an excellent idea to pump some life into a falling (fallen) franchise. It could work well, obviously if it’s produced properly.

    • yep, I lost interest in Tomb Raider a long time ago…

Looks like they have started off much better than D M effing C.

    • I agree, I’ve not bought a Tomb Raider game for years, but I’m already interested in this one and the new slant. Fighting for survival is a simple but powerful concept that, if done well, could be the boost this series needs. I’ll be keeping my eye on this one!

  6. Im a die hard TR fan, Underworld was actually good despite what people say, i enjoyed it more then Chronicles and Legend.
This looks nothing like LC, more japanese-y since its Square-Enix now, which i hope they dont do, she is british and should stay and look that way [no racism intended]

    • Don’t even talk to me about Legend, too many bad memories!

      • What’s wrong with Legend? I thought it was a great reboot after that crap called “AoD”.

      • What was wrong with Legend? It is a classic example of how not to reboot a franchise, it was pretty yes but it was not Tomb Raider but a short, linear story driven affair.

      • I agree with DRCD1. I enjoyed both Legend and Underworld and I think the devs made a move in the right direction after 5 identical games and a failed revamp. In fact, I’m more than sold with a new TR in the market.

      • Core Design killed Lara for some reason. If Crystal Dynamics kept making the same games, they’d have run into the same problem Core D. had. BTW, you’re name, Pedro… are you portuguese?

      • DRCD1

I’m not Portuguese (unfortunately, since Lisbon is one of the prettiest and cleanest cities I’ve ever been and Cintra is just amazing), I’m Brazilian.

      • I’m Portuguese. Lisbon is indeed quite pretty, but I think it’s nothing compared to other European capitals.

  7. This is a reboot, although I don’t know how far that carries into the franchise. More emphasis is based on survival and open world exploration this time round which in my mind is something TR should have done years ago.

  8. Hawt, I liked Underground a lil bit just need to save some space

  9. I’m hoping a return to the original name (without subtitle) will take us back to what was great about the original game – i.e. tombs and the raiding thereof. I loved the original’s exploration side, rather than the combat side that later games relied on.

  10. So really good, I’ve been wishing for a few months that this is the direction they’d take the series.
