PSP 2 Graphics “Comparable To PS3”

It’s been a week or so since we last heard about the PSP 2, and so IGN have decided to grab a few more incoming links (here’s another), ensuring that we haven’t forgotten about the already infamous Sony device by blabbing on the record about the still unconfirmed portable.

In the article, which closely echoes what we’ve already heard on the subject, the American outlet cites NDA-busting first hand information from someone with “direct hands-on experience” – and a rather big mouth.

The ‘source’ says that the PSP 2 currently features concaved analog sliders, a larger touch-enabled display, two cameras and a complete lack of physical media, at least in terms of disk input.

IGN also confirm the rear-mounted touch screen, as well as describing the portable’s graphical capabilities as “a beast” with “enough processing hardware to produce graphics comparable to early PlayStation 3 titles.”

Interestingly, the report suggests that developers will be able to port PS3 titles to the PSP 2, although this might just be a poor choice of words. They also infer that the PSP 2 might cost “as much as the PS3 itself” – surely commercial suicide judging by the response the PSPgo received when it launched.

Sadly, IGN’s source wasn’t willing to take any photographs, so we’re still just left with the blurry, fuzzy ones VG247 got hold of.

  1. “will be able to port PS3 titles to the PSP 2”

if it comes with 16gb built in again we`ll be able to get half a ps3 game then.

    • Most games fit well under 7 gb (seeing as the Xbox still uses DvD) So I don’t think the storage will be THAT much of a problem

      • Aye, and lets face it, GT6 wont see the light of day before the psp4 at least

      • PSP4? That’s optimistic!

  2. Surely the Nvidia GPU of the same scale wouldn’t fit there? Although the main graphics power of the PS3 is the Cell… You know.

    • things have shrunk alot in 5 years, but remember it doesn’t have to be as powerful as the resolution is only 480p (i think – up from the first psp’s 272) whereas the PS3 goes all the way to 1080p.
I think If it has 2 analogue sticks Call of Duty HD mobile would fly off in the mainstream!

  3. If it costs the same amount as a PS3, it will surely fail as you said. The PSPgo failed epically because for £20 more you could get a PS3, and the Go wasn’t that much of an improvement over the other PSP’s so it was pretty much useless anyway.
Besides it says “early PlayStation 3 titles”. The early PS3 game’s were pretty poor graphics wise, probably because Devs were getting used to the PS3’s capabilities. I seriously doubt it will be comparable to PS3 graphics, more like PS2 is what I would expect.

    • It does, but “early PS3” is still “PS3”. I honestly think IGN have been fed a few porkies here.

    • I’m looking forward to getting my hands on a PSP2 but if it’s priced similar to a PS3 that’s one sale they’ll loose.

    • I thought the PSP was comparable to early PS2. So this doesn’t sound like to much of a stretch.

      • Good point actually, although it is still quite a claim.

    • Heavenly Sword was an early PS3 game and it was gorgeous. Still is in my opinion.

What early PS3 games are you thinking about? Yes, later PS3 games look better (and worse, check my Saw II review) so it’s all relative.

      • I agree, Heavenly sword, Mototorm ans Assassin’s Creed were all relatively early in PS3’s release and they were all gorgeous.

      • Heavenly Sword is such a gorgeous game. Didn’t know much about the game at the time, but the look and graphics alone sold it to me. I still play it from time to time now.

  4. being download only or heavy built towards downloads … i can see it failing

    • Why not sell games on memory stick. I’m sure they could do something to stop piracy.

      • yup, download only and its doomed to fail! people (like me) still prefer to hold, see, feel the product they buy. I dont see why they cant use memory sticks, cheaper than umd’s. hell, I dont even care if the instruction manual is done away with and the packaging costs are reduced to almost zero, as long as we get some sort of physical media.

  5. It’s gonna be excpencive, and the guy that foresaw the death of handheld-consoles is getting a smug look upon his face.

  6. Just what I need, another difficult choice. Playstation Phone or PSP2?!? D=

    • Have the exact same dilema.

      • I’m thinking both !
My excuse will be: hey, I could do with a new phone, what’s this? A PlayStation phone? hmmm……
        :D

  7. This is so obvious I almost puke.

PSP 2 Graphics Comparable to PS3… We can even compare PS1 graphics with the PS1. Theres the console with less graphic power and the other console with more graphic power. That’s it.

    • Comparing a PS1 with a PS1 … someone should do this!

      • I have just done that, i could not tell the difference.

      • I can, but you have to really want to

      • Typo error. Comparing PS1 graphics to PS3 was what I meant.

  8. PSP2 isn’t on my radar at all

PS Phone all the way for me (assuming it’s not the total balls up we’ve come to expect from Sony Ericsson for the past couple of years) & I’ll see how the games develop on the 3DS…

    • TO be honest the 3DS is surprising me a lot with its graphical capabilities and line up. I think it’s be worth getting for MGS, Resi and DOA alone!

  9. as expensive as the ps3 dang…. i think i’m done with portable stuff than!

  10. So about as expensive as the 3DS will be? I’m going to take a wait and-see-mentality with this one…
