Monster Hunter To Switch Platforms In 2011?

According to a Hatena blog post in the latest issue of Japanese gaming rag, GeMaga, Ryozo Tsujimoto has discussed the possibilities of Monster Hunter changing platforms in the near future. “The 3DS is releasing, too, so I think the right time to switch [Monster Hunter] to new hardware is coming as well,” the series producer commented, though this is by no means a concrete announcement for an upcoming instalment. Monster Hunter began life as a title for the PlayStation 2, and though it was a solid game, the series didn’t start accumulating interest until it was reincarnated on Sony’s handheld as Monster Hunter Portable (or Freedom if you reside in PAL territories.) A few years down the line and Monster Hunter has expanded into a best-selling franchise, the latest instalment, Monster Hunter Portable 3, grossing almost 3.5 million sales in Japan within its first month.

Jumping ship from the PSP to the 3DS would indeed be a risky move; not in terms of how many sales Capcom are assured to achieve, but in terms of dividing the game’s die-hard fanbase. Especially after the debacle with Monster Hunter Tri’s development shifting from the PlayStation 3 to the Wii, and Capcom’s recent engagement with the 360, another platform change could put-off of the PlayStation fans who were responsible for the series’ initial uptake.

  1. Switching to the 3DS would be wrong, would be no where near the size or success on the DS

    • Are you kidding me? The 3DS is going to blow EVERYTHING away. The PSP is already left in the dust by the DS and phones right now. Nintendo is going to ship over 5 million units the first month for Japan and US.

      • 3DS maybe good but MH will not sell on it

      • It’s selling great on the Wii and the Japanese market loves both Monster Hunter and DS machines, so I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t sell well on 3DS.

  2. Do they mean actually switching, or going multiplatform? I know sometimes things get lost in translation, and it would be shocking to abandon your rather ridiculously large fanbase.

  3. If they do that i will hate Capcom forever and will never buy any of their games :(

    • either release the next game on psp2 or ps3.

      • Monster Hunter on the PS3 would be all kinds of awesome.

      • and huge, think every MH Fan in Japan would buy a ps3.

      • i’m actually looking forward to a MH PS3 title not a 3ds title or xbox title for that matter since like the article stated MH did start at sony i know they’re trying to make more money by switching to other hardware but they shouldn’t lose focus from sony.

  4. im going to hate capcom if they dont bring monster hunter to the ps3 and bring it to the 3DS

  5. How about bring it to a home console?

  6. They need to switch to PS3!!!

  7. Capcom Look its a bird! no its a plane!! oh its… a Playstation 3

  8. I wouldn’t mind if releasing on the 3DS but only if the PSP2 were to get it aswell
