Champions Online Now Free-To-Play

With City of Heroes having been expanded last year by the Going Rogue expansion, and the recent release of SOE’s DC Universe Online getting everyone (who can find a copy) excited, the superhero MMO scene is starting to step back into the spotlight. Original tights-sporting Champions Online now wants a slice of the action.

Developed by Cryptic Studios, the creators of City of Heroes, Champions Online has today gone free-to-play, with the latest game update dubbed “Free For All.”

Players can download and log in without having to spend a penny, though premium in-game content and a gold subscription (£10.34 per month) are still available. Cryptic CEO, John Needham, said the following:

We’re thrilled to finally be able to launch Champions Online: Free For All […] the Champions team has put an incredibl[e] amount of effort into making Free for All an amazing free-to-play MMO every gamer can enjoy at no cost.

Though it received a generally favourable reception, Champions Online has always stood in the shadows of Cryptic’s original super-powered MMO. At one stage during development, Cyptic announced that the game was coming to the Xbox 360, though this never became a reality.
