3DS Already Hacked To Use R4

One day. That is the duration of time it took for some of the Nintendo 3DS’ security to be bypassed to allow use of the R4 card. As of yet it appears that no 3DS games have been hacked, however pirated DS games are now able to run quite happily on the console.

Nintendo have recently commented that they plan to battle piracy via firmware updates, but one has to wonder how long it will be before pirated 3DS games become available.

  1. That’s a bit of a security failure on Nintendo’s part, isn’t it?

  2. Brilliant business move by Nintendo, and there is no sarcasm in that.

Around these parts the way it works is “everyone” knows you can hack a DS or Wii to “play free games”, so they choose that system. Then it proves to be too much of a hassle and they end up paying for games anyway.

You want your system to be hackable, but you don’t want it to be too easy. And when you release an update you want it to prevent people from playing copied games, but not lock them out from buying new legal games.

  3. It is not even out yet in Europe and it has already been hacked?!

I hope Nintendo can fix this otherwise they risk losing a lot of 3rd party games.

The Bigwigs at Nintendo must be fuming about this. This could have a negative impact on sales. I think this might be a new world record.:P
