Tretton: Xbox 360 “Running Out Of Steam”

In an interview with Fortune, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton has taken some serious shots at both Nintendo and Microsoft. Tretton has stated that Sony is experiencing its best year ever, and he is confident mainly because of the tech that is inside the PS3, which he believes outclasses its rivals.

“If you’re really going to sustain technology for a decade, you have to be cutting edge when you launch a platform. Here we are 4 years into the PlayStation 3, and it’s just hitting its stride. We’ll enjoy a long downhill roll behind it because the technology that was so cutting edge in 2006 is extremely relevant today and is conspicuously absent in our competition.”

In terms of the Xbox 360 and Wii, Tretton had the following to say:

“They’re starting to run out of steam now in terms of continuing to be relevant in 2011 and beyond. I mean, you’ve gotta be kidding me. Why would I buy a gaming system without a hard drive in it? How does this thing scale? Motion gaming is cute, but if I can only wave my arms six inches, how does this really feel like I’m doing true accurate motion gaming?

Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it’s a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, but no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those. He’s too old for that.”

Where do I start? From a personal viewpoint, I have often talked to others regarding the Xbox 360 and storage space in a DVD, and don’t even get me started on the 512mb of memory included with the Wii. Hardly a selling point.

What I vehemently disagree with is the “Game Boy experience” comment – it seems a tad…outdated. I actually feel slightly put out that because I own a DS it has been implied that I’m not a ‘self-respecting’ gamer. Oh, and referring to all gamers as “he”? The 90s called Jack, they want their ideologies back.

  1. He makes good points.
To be fair I’m happy to let him have this little dig seeing as for the past four years, Microsoft have been taking pot shots at any given chance.

You can have this one jack, just don’t make this a regular thing.

  2. Well most of the library of the DS is utter trash (experience from stores), but a babysitting tool… eh no

  3. No self-respecting CEO should resort to such tactics.

    • Don’t they all these days?

Being the SCEA CEO makes you the ultimate fanboy surely? :D

  4. I agree. The 360 is running out of steam. It has no real games coming when you look at the ps3 exclusives. If I didnt have my ps3 my 360 would be gathering dust. Kinect while selling well (off hype) has no real killer applications either.

I would say MS are in a pickle and for the Wii? Well despite its number in sales I dont know anyone who has one who still plays it. In saying that im going to poach my sisters so I can play some MH Tri!

    Good times lol.

  5. Meh, he makes some valid points and some not so valid.

Its his job to a degree to trash talk the opposition and sell his companies products…

    • Agree entirely, I’m getting tired of these kind of reactions in articles on TSA. The quality of critical analysis seems lacking sometimes on here. Mostly it’s great and the breakdown of an announcement or PR comment is done well. This article seems to miss the point. Jack is a PR man…so expect PR comments. They may be lies (or untruths) but one should see that and not get worked up IMO.

  6. Strange man. Has a point about the Xbox i suppose but everything else is utter garbage.

  7. Xbox still has forza 4 and gears 3, I’m probably gonna buy 1 back just to play these

    • If I was stuck with those with titles, I would honesty sell my Xbox… Microsoft really need to invest on new ips in order to bring in new gamers

  8. Don’t take it so personally. It’s a PR stunt to get articles out on websites like TSA, Isn’t that obvious?

  9. Look if what jacky T said makes xbox exclusive devs make more better games great, in turn sony devs will respond in better games. so who wins. US!

several comments above i agree with let them pot shot all they want, we all know which company has had the better line up this year. however cross branded 3rd party games have sold better on the xbox. could this be because ps3 users spent all there cash on games like killzone, LBP2, and GT5.. possibly

time will see. i agree with jack when he says the tech in ps3 is relevent more so now today than 2006. but you know whats not relevent. a +£200 price point.

  10. Very ignorant to say that the Gameboy/DS isn’t engineered towards older gamers, and though the 360 doesn’t have a line-up anywhere near as good as the PlayStation 3, “running out of steam” seems a bit harsh, now at least.

    • Agreed, Jim.

I actually agree with the essence of what he’s trying to get across but his comments don’t allow for any other train of thought or opinion and makes him appear far too bullish and arrogant. Remain confident, yes, just don’t look like a prick when speaking to the press about it.
