Surprisingly absolutely nobody and their nan, Sony has officially revealed the Next Generation Portable will be called the PlayStation Vita at their E3 press conference.
On top of that, Sony revealed that the new platform will have cross-game voice chat from launch (yup, still no news for the PS3). They also disclosed that the “Near” location application will support local ad-hoc multiplayer. It seems that the connectivity functions are going to be a big selling point for the handheld marvel.
So yeah, we can all stop talking about the NGP now.
Update: We’re hearing, from the stage, a retail price of $249 for the WiFi only version and $299 for the 3G version. Roughly analogous to the 3DS price then. That’ll do, Sony, that’ll do.

If they can release it in Australia for $299 AUD I will get it.
It really annoys me how much more they usually charge, our dollar is worth more than the US Dollar plus we are way closer to Japan (for shipping).

I’m deciding whether or not to wait until after Christmas to see what the state of play is before purchase. If the Vita sells out during the run up to festivities then greed filled online/offline traders(Parent blackmailers) will hike up the prices to extortionate amounts akin to the PS3 launch (£1000+ in some cases for a PS3).
After the dust has settled there is usually a glut of unwanted gifts flooding the market, so that could be the time to buy.
I definately want a Vita, but I’m undecided yet on purchase strategy.

Wifi Version for me then. I can always tether it to my Android phone if I really need it. If they would go the Amazon Kindle way with free 3G I’d consider it but not going to spend money on another contract to play online.

I’m considering the 3G version and I’m glad the pricing was announced. I expected something around £300 so these prices aren’t too bad. Interesting Play are doing pre-orders for the wifi version at £230
