Space cookies at the ready, it’s time for another one of those ‘weird’ games the PSN does rather well. The title in question is Dyad, an ‘abstract racing game that has influences in many genres including racing games, fighting games, puzzle games and classic arcade shooters.
I am not even going to try to explain how the game works as it’s baffling when the main programmer, Shawn McGrath, has a go – like this:
“Rather than having the traditional mechanics of break and accelerate, you must navigate an infinite tube by interacting with enemies for speed. This creates an interesting dynamic where your only obstacles are also your only source of speed.
Dyad presents you with a unique toolbox of interactions including hooking on enemies for speed, grazing enemies for energy, turning yourself into a highspeed lance to kill enemies, and more.
Dyad’s unique interaction palette creates a puzzle-like gameplay experience where you must constantly make intelligent choices to complete a wide variety of objectives including speed based objectives, various combo goals, and many more.”
I’m sure all will be clear when you play the game. Dyad runs at 60fps at 1080p and has been in production for three years and will make your brain go funny. Shawn says,
“Dyad is a cognitive experiment presented through gameplay. It will take you to a new world with unique physical rules, and take your mind to a new level of consciousness.”
Wow. Heavy. Check out the video below to ‘transmigrate through medative play’ – and pass the space cookies over please.
Still not convinced the game is one hook short of a hatstand? What if Shawn took scrap metal, bedsheets, recycled plywood and car parts and constructed a machine in which you can sit and it moves about in synchronisation with the game. Nutter!

Hypnotic I would say

I really like the look of this. Looks like the kind of game you’d put on, think you’ve been playing for 5 minutes, only to realise a whole hour has gone by.

Oooh, trippy. Reminds me of nights round at my mate’s flat in the 90’s… Ahh, those were the days.

“Transmigrate through meditative play”
What? :o

“break and accelerate” – You won’t go very fast if you’re broken. Everyone knows that…

The music at the end was amazing.
