PSN is back online, Sony apologises

The PlayStation Network has suffered a major outage, affecting the full gamut of online services that it provides.

Update 1AM GMT – PSN online functionality has been restored, Sony has confirmed and has apologised for the outage. The company has not given the reason why the servers were down for a day.

Update 11PM GMT – It is roughly 24hrs since the initial spike in Down Detectore reports and Sony’s PSN status page still reports a full outage. There are spotty reports of service being restored, but online gaming is far from guaranteed at this time.

This is now easily the longest unscheduled PSN service outage since the infamous 2011 hack.

Update 8:30PM GMT – After an outage that has lasted at least 19 hours without a word of comment from Sony, it does seem that some users have now managed to get back online.

About half of my Destiny clan are now back online with the other half having problems, and reports on Bluesky indicate that others are getting back online. My PS5 can now access the store but Destiny 2 is having problems and won’t connect.

Our original reporting follows.

It seems that PSN dropped offline just before midnight in the UK, with DownDetector noting a huge spike of reported issues. That naturally tailed off as people went to bed, but our own PlayStations are reporting that PSN is offline as of 9:30AM GMT.

The PlayStation Network status page is red across the board including account management, gaming and social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and even PlayStation Direct.

I think the “some services” is understating things a little, Sony…

So, if you were hoping to get some online gaming in this Saturday morning, you might need to turn on a PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or change plans to watch the 24/7 Tom & Jerry anniversary stream instead. I suppose you could always play something single-player instead.

We’ll try to keep an eye on things and update this page when PSN comes back.

  1. I spotted this when the browser wouldn’t load for my morning news feed. Incidently, Sony/Playstation now consider Google and Dudkduckgo as ‘malicious urls’ and are automodding/deleting those urls from psn messages and also issuing ‘breach of terms’ warnings to anyone using those urls in the browser. I guess it’s because hackers were using the browser for PS5 exploits/jailbreaking, annoying all the same. I can still access reddit – haven’t risked TSA though..

  2. Status is showing green now, so I think we’re back (what a long day that was, I had to go OUTSIDE)
