Grounded 2 has had its biggest update yet, with the release of the Into the Abyss update yesterday, but it’s also expanding its playerbase thanks to the game’s arrival on PlayStation 5 in early access.
Grounded 2 is now available across Xbox Series X|S, PC via both Xbox and Steam and PlayStation 5, and of course it’s available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
The Into the Abyss update adds a new underwater world to explore in Brookhollow Park, with Skunk Pond bringing new places to explore a new progression system, underwater base building and new creatures to battle. There’s also the Toe Biter Buggy to help you get around.
The pond promises underwater caverns and plenty of hidden points of interest, but it’s not the only new place to explore. The Bridge, Gnarly Bark and Pergola have also been expanded with more things to find.
We last looked at Grounded 2 for its initial Early Access launch last August, and Dom said, “Grounded 2 already has a clear advantage over its predecessor, taking everything that worked well in the original while making smart changes to various mechanics, making things more natural and easier to live with. I can’t wait to see where it heads over the coming months, as it feels like Grounded 2 could be another essential title for Obsidian and Xbox.”
Grounded 2 is taking a slightly different path to the original game, which waited until two years after the full release on Xbox to be ported to PS5 in early 2024. It was a major success, grabbing a high spot in the PlayStation Store charts for an extended period, tapping into some rather popular genres of the day. Obsidian is best known for the RPGs, but Grounded and its sequel are four player co-op survival game that borrow just a little from the classic film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!
While Grounded 2 is still emblazoned with Obsidian’s brand, it’s actually a significant co-development project with Eidos Montreal. The recent upheaval and layoffs at Xbox which impacted Obsidian, and with the lukewarm receptions and sales for Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 last year, Obsidian has been redirected to develop a new Fallout project in partnership with Bethesda. It’s a fan-pleasing decision, given the enduring popularity of Fallout: New Vegas, but it could be a good while before that project bears fruit.
