Supernatural detective adventure The Séance of Blake Manor launches today on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, as well as through Xbox Game Pass, having originally launched on PC via Steam just over a year ago.
Set in Ireland in the year 1897, players take on the role of Detective Declan Ward who has been summoned to solve the case of the disappearance of Evelyn Deane. The case is going to be tough, especially when it is Halloween; you are surrounded by mystics gathered for a séance, and the unexplainable situations that plague the investigation. The gameplay consists of speaking to the other people gathered on the island, observing the events that are taking place, and being in the right place at the right time. Time is not a luxury Declan has due to the guests going about their day, so if you are not in certain places, you may miss vital evidence that could help solve the case.
The game draws inspiration from Irish mythology merged with the classic look of the Victorian era, weaving together supernatural elements with themes of religion and class divisions. The art style has been inspired celebrated artists including Mike Mignola, known for Hellboy, alongside Edward Risso and Tim Sale. There is also a dynamic, period-inspired soundtrack that adapts to the player’s location and actions, and that sounds rather delightful.
In our preview of The Séance of Blake Manor, Stefan wrote, “Having such a broad cast of characters to investigate, it will be fascinating to see how this gels with the game’s time limit. Certainly, there’s an implication from my brief game over that you need to not only save Miss Deane, but also save people from attending the séance. This is absolutely one to watch for fans of mysteries and puzzles.”
