New Ico and Shadow of the Colossus HD Videos

Sony have updated the Japanese websites for the two critically acclaimed games overnight. With those updates came a couple of new videos to tantalise and excite.

Both HD updates are looking pretty good and with the release date looming (end of September) the wait is almost over.

  1. Love both these games. Have both the PS2 versions and a PS3 Fat so can play them upscaled. Anyone any idea about how different these HD versions would be?

    • I have the originals too but found that the visuals suffered a bit with the upscaling so for me the difference will be worth buying it again… Go on, treat yourself! :)

  2. Utterly awesome. I barely ever pre-order anything. Actually, thinking about it, I never have. However, this has been pre-ordered with Play.com for £28 (I think) and consider me utterly stoked with excitement.

    *passes out*

  3. Things I learned today
    It’s eee-co not eye-co

Looks fantastic, but I just couldn’t get into either game

    • Much like Flower, Journey, etc, they’re not for everyone. Once in a while you have to sit there and think “I’d be wasting my money if I bought this” but it’s great to know such titles exist regardless. Just like Limbo. There’s something wonderful about the industry when it can contain staggering beauty and ignore all the usual genres just for a moment.

    • the pronunciation thing makes the working title for The Last Guardian (Trico) really stupid. I always thought, and I’m almost sure I saw this explicitly stated, that it was a play on the numerical prefix like in “tripod” as it was their third game. Now I realise they’d been calling it “Treeco” which makes it sound like an evil corporation that has it’s headquarters in a secret forest.

      • Take your pick, fella. To quote:

The game will revolve around the developing friendship between the boy and a giant, feathered creature resembling a griffin named Trico/Toriko(?). The name of the creature can be taken to mean “prisoner” (虜 toriko?), “baby bird” (鳥の子 tori no ko?), or a portmanteau of “bird” (鳥 tori?) and “cat” (猫 neko?).

Either way, Pets R Us don’t stock ’em. ;)

      • Indeed. Toriko is a play on words. It means “baby bird” (adding ko to anything in Japanese makes it a “child”. Neko = cat. Koneko = kitten. Inu = dog. Koinu = puppy). It’s used as both a suffix (as above) or a prefix (as with toriko).

But, and this is where it gets really cute, as the second syllable of cat is also “ko”, a Japanese person would ALSO read Toriko as “Baby Bird Cat”, all inferred from the three syllables.

(Oh, and I don’t know about toriko meaning prisoner. I’ve always used the word 囚人 (shūjin) for prisoner. Maybe it’s just another word like “inmate”. Not sure.)

      • Thanks for the info Kovacs :)

      • It’s because the title is TORICO, not Trico.

    • Yep. Japanese “i” = eee sound.

Like the “Ishimura” from Dead Space. It’s not “Aishimurah”. It’s “Eeeshimurah.”

Good thing about Japanese is that there is only one way to pronounce the syllables. By the way, “Eye-Ko” (as I know a lot of people erroneously call it) would actually be three syllables in Japanese. “A” + “I” + “KO”.

“Ai” = “eye” in Japanese. Just think of the word for “yes” (Hai!)

      • s’all Dutch to me.. :)

      • Funny how I pronounced Ico as AIKO and Trico is TREEKO.

  4. So many games, so little time….!!!

    • So very true. When I had time on my hands, I never had the money, now I have the money I’m always at work……

  5. Looking forward to picking this up, only ever rented Ico back in the day and the most experience I’ve had with SotC was with the demo. I’ve seen the original (preowned) versions in game stores from time to time, but PS2 games tend to look a bit…dodgy on my HDTV, to say the least.

As a bonus, I’ll also finally be able to avoid that “lolwut” stare I occasionally get from friends when I reveal that I never bought SotC. :P

  6. It’s like PRINTING MONEY!

Really, how is the HD version any different from having a 60GB version of PS3 and popping in a PS2 game with smoothed out textures?

Oh, right! Nowadays, almost none of the PS3 can run PS2 games, so they just re-release them. Because? It’s like PRINTING MONEY.

I wish people who are doing “HD” versions of the games were actually making them look somewhat decent. Halo: Combat Evolved might be one of the minority of HD remakes that is not a total rip off.

    • Actually, as far as i know The God of War HD collection & The Prince of Persia HD Collection were completely remastered & actually look pretty nice – Sure, there are some decidedly PS2-esque cut scenes, but it is to be expected really, as they were PS2 games after all!

That’s the only two i can speak about from actual experience, but i hear that The Tomb Raider HD Collection & The Sly Trilogy actually look pretty sweet too.

Plus trophies! Don’t forget the trophies!

      • It would certainly be a lot nicer though if they all had the same amount of effort put into them. Having played PoP: Warrior Within on PS2, the HD version on PS3 seems like a complete shambles in comparison (especially the prevalent sound issues)- and to top it all off, I remember reading in several places that even some of the bugs and glitches from the original release back in 2004 were STILL there.

The GoW HD collection is definitely a lot better though imo, the textures don’t seem to have been upgraded much compared to some of the other HD updates, but it still looks pretty amazing and seems fairly polished overall – something of a testament to how good the games were in the first place I suppose. Considering I hadn’t played the originals back on PS2, there’s not much more I could have asked for. :)

…of course, I could easily ask for PS2 backwards compatibility on all PS3 models, but…yeah, that probably ain’t gonna be happening anytime soon.

    • Because it gives people who haven’t had them before to play them. I never played ICO or SOTC but would have really liked to. Now i get that opportunity. It’s like The Sly Collection, i never played them when they originally came out but i got the collection because i wanted to see what it was like.

  7. Damn… just remembered a SotC spoiler that I saw years ago.
I thought I had suppressed that memory :(

  8. “Bonsoir”

  9. Finally will be able to play through ICO, can’t wait.
And also reliving SotC, one of the most amazing games I’ve ever played in HD and with trophies… Magnificent.

    Can’t wait.

  10. I know nothing about these games, other than lots of people wank over them.

I must admit, I’m having trouble seeing what the appeal is? I’ll give them a go though.
