No Battlefield 3 For Steam?

It’s no secret that the teams over at EA and Steam haven’t been seeing eye to eye. First up was the removal of Crysis 2 from Steam, and now it seems that Battlefield 3 might not be joining the party either.

This latest report stems from a list released by EA (which has since been removed) showing the digital retailers expected to be selling BF3.  EA’s service, Origin, makes the cut, as does GamersGate and Direct2Drive.

Notice the major omission?

  1. Seems a bit odd not to allow one of the major digital retailers to sell your game. I have not even heard of Origin. Surely Valve are willing to sit down with them and work out a deal. I wonder if EA wanted a huge cut of the profits that would leave Valve with very little made from BF3?
    I do hope they can resolve this soon as it could affect how many copies will be sold for the PC.

    I think this may cause EA to stop doing console ports of valve’s games unless they have started to do it themselves.

    • Origin is just the latest name for EA’s own download service. Previously it was EA Link, EA Download Manager… it was always crap before, but I’ve not tried it in its latest guise.

    • Yeah I think Valve do the console versions in house now, if Portal 2 is anything to go by.

      And what a stupid move by EA if it’s true, doesn’t steam acount for 60% of all digital sales on average?

  3. Well I am glad it won’t be on Steam as I will now buy the game, simply because I detest Steam with a passion.

    Unable to play my games online when Steam goes down which is atleast 2 or 3 times a week, and it has nothing to do with my connection as when it goes down I just go and play a game that doesn’t need Steam, running to play it.

    Well Done EA now we just need other developers etc to pull there games from Steam.

    • I think you are pretty alone on that. I find Steam brilliant and will not buy any games via digital, other then on Steam.

    • This must be something at your end. I have been running Steam since I got Half-Life 2 in 2005 and I have never been unable to play any of my games.

      2 or 3 times a week? There must be something wrong at your end. I have over 60 games on there now and I’ve never experienced this with any of them.

    • Wrong end of the stick. It was Steam who removed Crysis2 for making content available elsewhere (Origin), therefore breaking their T&C it wasn’t EA who pulled it.

    • I also suggest that there’s another gremlin lurking somewhere, since Hl2s release i’ve used steam and I only recall 2 instances of steam being down when I wanted to play.

  4. @ techno2k8 – I have had no problems like that with steam and hopefully never will, can understand how annoying that would be.

    If BF3 is not goin to be on steam im not getting it, i dont want cd’s knocking about and im not signing in to yet another online service to play it when all my other games are on steam.

  5. I am fine with EA pushing hard to make Origin compete with Steam, it’s their products after all and the more competition in the digital market place hopefully the better for all. But they really should go about this differently by perhaps allowing Steam to sell BF3 but making the Origin version more attractive in price, content and functionality.

    Steam is established in the marketplace already, you won’t compete EA by putting it in the naughty boy corner, too many users you’ll upset.

    • Pretty sure EA would allow Steam to sell the game or allow the game to connect to Steam to make use of the platforms features. But Steam will not allow any game which has content available elsewhere not available to Steam. It probably is Steam’s choice just like the last EA title they kicked off Steam because some DLC was being made available for it on Origin & not on Steam

  6. Not really bothered, don’t see the point of Steam anyway. I want something physical to buy, I might be old fashioned, but there you go.

    • Get with the times bobbins ;P i would say yes for music and DVD but gaming for me having the box ain’t all that for me now. Steam IMO is ‘the’ platform i would only want to use because of it’s flawless updating and excellent sales on games it has.

      Origin on the other hand is a buggy mess, yeah it’s in beta form but come on how long have they had that Downloader running for?

      • nothing to do with the times if you did a poll saying physical media or digital physical would win.

      • But whats the difference of using Steam to playing on a console? DO you need a good spec PC still?

    • Digital vs Physical is nothing to with Steam

      If you bought the physical version of the game from a shop, you just register it with Steam and take advantage of all the Steam features.

      This is the equivalent of buying a PS3 version & not being able to connect to the PSN & your friends etc & having to use the publishers own network

      • I don’t think I actually get it. I thought it was PC gaming but you don’t actually buy the game, you sort of rent it per month? me confused

      • Steam is like lets say PSN all your friends are there in one place and there is one store where you buy games for your PC and i understood that you download all of the games you buy. At least that’s what i think it is i haven’t bought anything from there cause my PC isn’t powerful enough to run anything but i’ve used the Steam client program and that is what it looks like

      • Where did you hear that? Steam is just another online store for digital games, albeit probably the largest, most well known, and best. Once you buy a game it’s yours.

    • You could always just download it and check out what its all about. It is a free service after all.

  7. I imagine it’ll hurt EA more than Valve overall, which isn’t a bad thing.

  8. It seems like EA doesn’t even want to beat CoD…
    Steam is brilliant but also has it’s disatvantages.
    I usually go for the Steam version of a game during the summer and winter sales periods and only if the game is not censored in the German Steam store.

  9. Ridiculous if true, Steam is a much bigger platform than EAs own and I can see people not buying this because of it not being on there.
    Hell, I wouldn’t have 90% of the PC games that I do have if it wasn’t for Steam!

    • Same here. I bought around 15 PC games in the last 12 month and only 2 of them were physical copies, the rest was from Steam.
      I’ll go for the physical copy because I can’t get it from Steam.

    • Agreed. I actually haven’t bought a physical PC game since I found the joy that is Steam. I got 40 – 50 games just in the summer sale, most were smaller or older titles I hadn’t gotten around to, but still I reckon I did pretty well.

  10. Id still buy it even if i had to get it from Lidl or Aldi .

    • I’d be even more likely to buy it if it were in Lidl or Aldi- I might even get it for a tenner. :P
