Some Folding@home Encouragement

Let’s take a break from Meet the Folder for today, we’ll go back to them on Friday and Saturday. Instead, I’ll be sharing thoughts on Folding@home from the guys that run this place, from Uncle ‘Blue, down to the less frequent writers, then maybe in the comments you can leave your own thoughts on Folding@home, and TSA’s team. As always this post will hopefully get more people interested in folding, whilst making those of you that already take part feel loved.

So, here are the folks that wanted to say something about folding. The guys further up are lower down, if you know what I mean…

Jason (Jas-n)

Folding@home caught my eye since the early PS3 days, although I’m not sure what caught my eye. Since then Folding@home has been about 2 things, folding for the good of future health with very little input, call it the Gran Turismo B-Spec mode of the NHS. Secondly is the healthy competition between team-mates, trying to fold more then them. From there, the obsession grew along with the team size, watching new people join makes our effort more powerful and brings the good-will feeling higher and higher. The feeling comes more true when people like RedStarGlow, and more recently, DeadlyChipmonk bring their mammoth efforts to the team. helping us to push past the big names like N4G and Eurogamer.

So to all of you lot who fold thank you, and keep up the good work.

To those that don’t, as fattyuk proves, even with a net-top, you can still fold, and the best thing is, all of the Folding@home software is designed to cause as little interruption to your computing/gaming lifestyle as possible.

It’s great to read about the folding team through all of the posts. There are some real dedicated souls out there, folding for more hours than I can count to, and together they do a great job.

Whilst I’m not one for folding myself, I do like to keep up with the team and see what they’re up to; it’s always excellent news and helps make TSA unique.

The fact that I am the first Miss World to be decided by a global vote makes this award unbelievably precious. I will cherish the memories of tonight. Now that I have become a genuine world ambassador I intend to do everything in my power to promote the good causes that have been the driving force for Miss World for over half a century. I only hope that I can do the job with the dignity and panache that Rosanna Davison has done for the last year. Also, please using Folding@home on your PS3, it helps clever scientists. Set it up in screensaver mode and you can help world peace!

Folding@home takes the competitive nature of gamers on TSA, and puts that quality to good use. To me Folding@home is like one never ending game where people compete to make the largest amount of points or work units while simultaneously helping in  the research against major diseases such as Cancer. I can see who is likely to overtake me, who I can overtake and follow my progress while all the hard work is done on my PC/PS3 without me even noticing. It’s a win-win situation.

Kris (Halbpro)

Folding is one of those very rare charitable activities that makes you feel like you’re doing something without actually requiring any effort on your part. Sure, you have to set it up, but that’s so simple that it doesn’t really require any thought at all. If you just follow the instructions on TSA you’ll be up and running in no time and getting that vaguely smug feeling that you’re doing your bit.

You even get a nice dose of competition mixed in as you try and find more things to fold on, bringing up your overall position in the stats.

Alex (nofi)

They’re doing the best they can with an incredibly unglamorous app and the figures they’ve achieved as a team are tremendous.

Peter (colossalblue)

Folding is one of those quiet little applications that doesn’t get a lot of attention in the mainstream but it’s doing some incredibly important work. TSA’s folding team show a rare determination and enthusiasm for the compassionate little application and I’m proud to have them attached to the site.

Don’t forget to leave your own messages in the comments.

      Lovely article too.

  6. Kind words of encouragement! I’ve recently set my pc to launch f@h at startup, that way it will always fold when I use it. This is one step forward to increase my contribution.
