Rage: 22GB Install On Xbox 360

John Carmack from id Software has been talking about the problems of squeezing Rage on to our favourite consoles and has revealed that the Xbox 360 version will have an ‘all or nothing’ install of around 21-22 GB.

“On the 360 we don’t have a partial install option; it’s all or nothing, which is kind of unfortunate. It means you have to install 21/22GB of stuff which takes a long time but if you’ve got it and you play it on the 360 that’s the way to go.”

If you read my hands on feature with game I discussed there was some noticeable graphical problems and John has given an explanation.

“Once you get everything from memory that works pretty good, but if you’re coming straight from the hard drive then the first time you walk into everything from the DVD or from the Blu-ray – even worse in terms of total latency time – you listen to that Blu-ray churning around as its pulling everything in.”

That doesn’t quite explain the problem I encountered during my hands on,

“I did a little test in one building and span quickly 180 degrees and watched as a few textures loaded in. I then span back to the way I was facing barely five seconds ago – and the textures loaded in. Then I span back, and they loaded in again.”

It’s not long before Rage hits the shelves and we can give you a verdict but it does seem the PS3 version will be at a slight disadvantage.

John’s comments come from a one and half hour keynote speech at Quakecon which you can view below.

  1. Why is the ps3 version at a disadvantage – have they dicussed the install options for it?

  2. & we all thought Gran Turismo 5’s install was big.

  3. How do you even get 22GB on a DVD disc!

    • A 3 disc game perhaps! Castlevania was 2 disc for 360. 1 disc for PS3
Hell Lost Oddysey (sp?) was a 4 disc game years ago o_0
I don’t mind installing it on my PS3 that way I can read the Rage manual on control layouts and in screen indicators, or make a sandwich? I did that with GT5, Bioshock and Metal Gear. (For Bioshock I had a specail edition so all I did was listen to the soundtracks and artbook while the game was installing)

      • Having a DVD drive and not a HD DVD is why the 360 is suffering!

  4. I seen this on EG – no idea on the reliability of the poster and where he got the info but he seems to know what hes talking about.

Carmack basically stated that of the two consoles, 360 version is the one to get, because they could never quite get it running right on the PS3. He also says that you need to install the entire game for the 360 if you want it to run right.

He is already apologizing, saying the critics are definitely going to ‘ding’ the game because of some of the issues the game has. He said some textures and details can take up to 15 seconds to fully load, a worst case scenario, but it’s there.

Carmack also stated that the next game they make will benefit from all of the stuff they learned, but they were too far down the development path to make any significant changes to Rage. **

  5. OVER 9000 MB!

  6. It’s an engine that draws heavily on RAM and VRAM from what’s been said.

In all fairness playing it on a console is like taking a surfboard to a naval war game. Yes, you can do it, but by far not the best option.
Basically, it’s the exact opposite of what you want a game engine for the PS3 to be.

Uncharted and Killzone look fantastic because they cater to that cell, and they’re like a glass oreo dispenser – they know what order things are gonna happen.

RAGE looks like a 360 degree buffet table where all the food is GPU and RAM sticks, which neither of the console have in excess.
